Most people live thousands of days.

Yet remember only a handful.

The difference?

They were present for some…
and absent for the rest.

The hustle and bustle of everyday life is upon us now more than ever.

When we wake in the morning, our minds race ahead before our feet even touch the floor. We mentally travel through the day before we physically begin it. We think about where we have to go, what we have to do, who we have to meet, and what problems may be waiting for us.

Then the routine begins.

We jump in the shower.

Handle the necessities.

Dress for success.

Coffee up.

Hit the road.

For many people, this describes not just one day, but hundreds of days each year.

The question is…

What makes today different?

What separates this day from yesterday?

Or last week?

Or last month?

Too often we rush from destination to destination, arriving only so we can leave again.

But did you notice the journey?

Did you see the details?

Did you look around?

Did you notice the sky?

The trees?

The birds?

The people coming and going just like you?

Did you hear anything special?

Did you see something beautiful?

Did you pause long enough to realize that this day has never existed before and never will again?

Every day arrives as a one-of-a-kind gift.

Yet many of us treat it like a duplicate.

How about you?

Did you contribute something today?

Did you touch someone’s life, even briefly?

It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.

Perhaps a smile.

A kind word.

A compliment.

Holding a door.

Showing patience.

Offering encouragement.

You know exactly what I mean.

Most of us used to do these things naturally.

Then we got busy.

I remember pulling into a parking lot one day and spotting an open space. Another driver saw it too.

I maneuvered just a little faster and pulled in first.

Then I looked over and saw the expression on the older gentleman’s face.

Something inside me spoke.

I rolled down my window and asked,

“Sir, is this your space?”

He smiled and said yes.

Truthfully, it wasn’t.

But I backed out and gave it to him anyway.

Later, we crossed paths inside the building.

We exchanged a glance.

We said very little.

Yet somehow we said a lot.

Moments like that stay with you.

I often notice people who have taken extra care with their appearance.

A sharp suit.

A beautiful dress.

A polished pair of shoes.

Someone who clearly took pride in presenting their best self.

I make it a point to acknowledge them.

Why?

Because they took the time to show up.

And everyone likes to be seen.

The world moves so fast that many people become invisible.

A simple acknowledgment reminds them they are not.

You can move through life allowing every day to blend into the next.

One big blur.

A boring blur.

Or…

You can create moments.

Moments that become memories.

Moments that become stories.

Moments that remind you that life is happening now.

Not yesterday.

Not tomorrow.

Now.

As I once wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“Life is not measured by the years that pass, but by the moments that wake us up while we are living them.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

The opportunities are everywhere.

Waiting.

Presenting themselves all day long.

A chance to encourage.

A chance to help.

A chance to notice.

A chance to care.

A chance to be fully present.

So the next time you wake up in the morning, make a decision.

Refuse to allow the day to become another blur.

Refuse to sleepwalk through a gift that will never come again.

Instead…

Make it a day like no other day.

Create a moment.

And then another.

And another.

Soon you will discover that a meaningful life is not built from years.

It is built from moments.
