SILENCE HAS A COST TOO
Many people believe that saying nothing is the safe choice.
Sometimes it is.
Many times it isn’t.
Because when truth needs a voice and no one speaks…
The problem grows stronger.

WHEN YOU DON’T SPEAK UP…
YOU COMPOUND THE PROBLEM
SILENCE HAS A COST TOO
There are few things that frustrate me more than watching people complain endlessly about a problem while doing absolutely nothing to solve it.
They talk about it.
Analyze it.
Criticize it.
Gossip about it.
Point fingers at it.
Yet when given the opportunity to speak directly, constructively, and honestly…
Silence.
That silence comes at a price.
WE DON’T NEED REFEREES…
WE NEED PARTICIPANTS
Life is not a spectator sport.
You were not put here merely to sit in the stands and comment on everyone else’s performance.
You were invited onto the field.
Your experiences matter.
Your observations matter.
Your wisdom matters.
Your voice matters.
I cannot tell you how many times I have sat beside someone who had a brilliant insight, a practical solution, or a meaningful observation.
I would say:
“That’s a great point. Why don’t you share it?”
Many choose silence.
To the credit of others, a little encouragement is all they need.
And when they finally speak, everyone benefits.
THE ANSWER IS ALREADY NO
One of the great Pearls truths is simple:
“The answer is always no if you never ask.”
Think about that.
The opportunity is already lost when nothing is attempted.
The idea is already rejected when never shared.
The solution is already unavailable when never offered.
Silence guarantees failure.
Participation at least creates possibility.
THEY SPOKE UP TOO
Human beings have always felt compelled to leave evidence that they were here.
Ancient cave paintings.
Monuments.
Books.
Poetry.
Music.
Art.
Letters.
Stories.
Why?
Because something within us desires expression.
Even people living tens of thousands of years ago felt compelled to say:
“We were here.”
“We lived.”
“We mattered.”
“We learned.”
“We loved.”
“We struggled.”
They spoke up in the only way available to them.
The question becomes:
Will you?
BUT I’M NO GOOD…
PHOOEY.
Let’s put that excuse to rest right now.
If you are worried about criticism, remember this:
People criticize anyway.
If you are worried about disagreement, remember this:
People disagree anyway.
If you are worried about making mistakes, remember this:
Everyone makes them.
If you are worried about sounding foolish, remember this:
The only guaranteed foolishness is never trying.
As I have often written:
“We were not put here to be defeated.”
Nor were we put here to hide.
OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES
Some of the wisest things I have ever heard came from unexpected places.
Children.
Strangers.
Customers.
Neighbors.
Students.
People with no title.
No authority.
No credentials.
Truth has never required a business card.
Wisdom often appears where least expected.
That means there is a very real possibility that someone needs to hear what you have to say.
FREE SPEECH WAS EXPENSIVE
Need I remind you that people sacrificed greatly so that others could speak freely?
Men and women fought wars.
Defended liberties.
Protected rights.
Preserved freedoms.
One of those freedoms is the ability to express your thoughts.
Use that privilege wisely.
Use it respectfully.
Use it courageously.
But use it.
WHAT IF THEY DISAGREE?
Then they disagree.
Life goes on.
You are not required to think like everyone else.
Nor are they required to think like you.
Healthy discussion sharpens people.
Ideas improve through examination.
Solutions emerge through conversation.
Silence prevents all of that.
SPEAK WITH WISDOM
Of course, speaking up does not mean speaking recklessly.
Courtesy matters.
Tact matters.
Timing matters.
Listening matters.
Emotional control matters.
The goal is not to be the loudest person in the room.
The goal is to contribute something worthwhile.
A thoughtful sentence often carries more weight than a thousand angry words.
PEARLS TO PONDER
“The answer is always no if you never ask.”
“The purpose of life is to discover the purpose of life.”
“The greatest treasure you will ever discover is another human being.”
“No one got to where they are without the help of another.”
And perhaps today’s Pearl:
“Silence may protect your comfort, but it rarely solves the problem.”
Think about that one.
WHEN YOU STAY SILENT
Problems continue.
Misunderstandings grow.
Mistakes repeat.
Opportunities disappear.
Solutions remain hidden.
Not because nobody had them.
Because nobody shared them.
WHAT THEN?
Speak up.
Offer the idea.
Ask the question.
Provide the solution.
Share the insight.
Tell the truth.
Encourage someone.
Defend what is right.
Stand for what is fair.
Live your life.
Not someone else’s.
And remember this:
If you don’t speak up now…
Then when?
