Someone cheated me.
But before they ever took anything from me…
they took something from themselves.

Money can be replaced.
Peace within is much harder to recover.
Someone cheated me and a friend.
But first…
they cheated THEMSELVES.
You see, I suffered a material loss.
Money.
Something measurable.
Something that can eventually be replaced.
But the person who cheats another human being risks something far more valuable.
They disturb the very place inside themselves where peace comes to rest.
I went and spoke honestly about what happened.
I told the truth as I knew it.
From there, I have to trust that the proper processes, people, consequences and ultimately justice will do their work.
What belongs to me may return in its own time.
What does not return may still teach me something.
And what was unjust does not become right merely because somebody temporarily got away with it.
In that…
I trust.
THE LOWER NATURE
What is it about a human being that causes someone to gamble something so valuable for something so petty?
We call it temptation.
Greed.
Opportunity.
Weakness.
Maybe all of them.
But why surrender so much for so little?
A human being is capable of imagination, compassion, intelligence, creativity, courage and love.
Then suddenly that same magnificent creature decides:
“I think I will cheat somebody today.”
PRETTY DISAPPOINTING.
There is a lower nature available to all of us.
That does not mean we have to hand it the steering wheel.
Temptation may knock.
You still decide whether to open the door.
YOU GAIN BUT YOU LOSE MORE
Whatever somebody gains through:
cheating,
lying,
stealing,
fraud,
swindling,
deception,
or deliberately fooling another person…
comes with a hidden invoice.
At first, the gain may appear valuable.
Money was obtained.
Property was kept.
An advantage was won.
Somebody thinks:
“I got away with it.”
Did you?
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
What exactly did you get?
Because if obtaining something requires you to become less honest…
less trustworthy…
less honorable…
then perhaps you did not acquire something.
Perhaps you SOLD something.
And the price was part of yourself.
YOU CANNOT ESCAPE YOUR CONSCIENCE
My friend and I may have suffered a financial loss.
But money is not the only accounting system operating in life.
There is another ledger.
The one you carry inside.
Conscience.
Some people can quiet it for a while.
Excuse themselves.
Blame circumstances.
Tell themselves the victim deserved it.
Rewrite the story.
Laugh about it.
Pretend nothing happened.
But somewhere underneath all that noise…
the truth remains.
A healthy conscience keeps reminding us when our conduct and our values are no longer living in the same house.
That discomfort can become something useful.
It can lead to remorse.
Then repentance.
Then restitution.
Then changed behavior.
That is the better road.
Not endless guilt.
Correction.
YOU CAN START BY MAKING GOOD
If you have cheated somebody…
lied to somebody…
taken what was not yours…
or knowingly harmed someone for personal gain…
there is a place to begin.
MAKE GOOD.
Return what can be returned.
Repay what can be repaid.
Tell the truth.
Apologize without decorating the apology with excuses.
Then…
DO IT NO MORE.
That final part matters.
Repentance is not merely feeling badly about what happened.
It is turning.
Changing direction.
A person who truly changes does not keep returning to the same behavior while repeatedly announcing regret.
The proof eventually appears in conduct.
WHAT PRICE PEACE?
You cannot buy peace within yourself.
You can buy:
a house,
a car,
a vacation,
a steak dinner,
a television,
a watch,
and all kinds of beautiful things.
But try walking into a store and saying:
“I would like three pounds of inner peace please.”
Good luck.
LOL.
Peace is not purchased that way.
It grows from alignment.
What you believe.
What you say.
What you do.
When those things begin agreeing with each other…
peace has somewhere to live.
That is one reason honesty is worth so much.
You do not have to remember which story you told.
You do not have to hide the evidence.
You do not have to keep looking over your shoulder.
You simply stand where you stood before.
THE PERSON CHEATED SECOND
This is why I say:
I was cheated SECOND.
The cheater was first.
Before another person’s money was disturbed…
their character was challenged.
Before another person’s trust was violated…
their own integrity was put on the bargaining table.
Before somebody else suffered a loss…
they had already agreed to operate beneath what they were capable of being.
That may be the greater loss.
Material things can return.
Character can return too…
but rebuilding it takes work.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Here is one Richie rule:
Never trade something priceless inside yourself for something temporary outside yourself.
Another:
If you have to lose your peace to obtain it…
you paid too much.
And one more:
You may fool another person for a while.
Do not confuse that with having fooled yourself.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
From the spirit of Pearls for the Soul:
“Character reveals its true value when there is something to gain by abandoning it.”
From the spirit of God I AM:
“What we do to another person also leaves an impression upon the person we are becoming.”
From the spirit of It Is Finished:
“Repentance begins when excuses end and correction begins.”
PEARLS INSIGHT
Cheating damages more than a transaction.
It weakens trust.
It can damage relationships, reputations and opportunities.
And for the person committing the act, it can create conflict between personal values and actual behavior.
The healthiest response to wrongdoing is not endless shame.
It is accountability.
Recognize what happened.
Acknowledge your part.
Repair what can be repaired.
Change the behavior.
Then live differently.
That is how integrity is rebuilt.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This connects directly with CREDIBILITY…THE CROWN JEWEL OF BELIEVABILITY.
Credibility takes years to build and can be injured in minutes.
It also connects with WHAT IS HONESTY?
Honesty is not merely something we offer other people.
It becomes the ground beneath our own feet.
And RESIST TEMPTATION TO PAY BACK…DON’T DO IT reminds us that being wronged does not give us permission to become what injured us.
Someone else’s bad conduct should not recruit us into bad conduct of our own.
FINAL SAY
Someone cheated me.
Yes.
There was a loss.
There may be consequences.
There may be restitution.
There may not be.
But I refuse to let somebody else’s misconduct decide who I become next.
That would be getting cheated TWICE.
The first loss was material.
The second would be mine to prevent.
So I tell the truth.
I protect what needs protecting.
I use the proper channels available to me.
I learn.
And then I keep my own conscience clean.
Because when everything else has been counted…
money,
property,
success,
winning,
losing…
there remains something you cannot put a price tag on.
PEACE WITHIN YOURSELF.
Guard it carefully.
It is expensive to lose…
and priceless to keep.
