Before a leatherback sea turtle becomes a majestic giant, it must survive a beginning that seems almost impossible.
It enters life running—and teaches us never to surrender before our own journey truly begins.
Beautiful and majestic to behold, the leatherback sea turtle has earned every bit of our admiration.
It is the largest turtle in the world—a massive creature capable of moving through the water with extraordinary grace and determination.
Yet every giant leatherback began as something small, vulnerable and completely unprepared-looking.
It began as a hatchling beneath the sand.
THEY RETURN TO THEIR BEGINNING
Leatherbacks travel enormous distances across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Some migrate thousands of miles between their feeding and nesting grounds.
When the time comes, females return to tropical and subtropical nesting regions—often connected to where their own lives began.
There is no single universal island where all leatherbacks gather. Their nesting beaches exist in different parts of the world.
Still, the message remains remarkable:
After years in the vast ocean, something within them points toward the place where the next generation must begin.
HARD, FOCUSED WORK
The female comes out of the water at night and pulls her enormous body across the sand.
She was designed for the sea, not for easy travel upon land. Every movement requires effort.
She selects a nesting place and begins digging a deep chamber using her rear flippers. She lays roughly one hundred eggs, covers them carefully and disguises the area before returning to the ocean.
No shovel.
No blueprint.
No written instructions.
Just an ancient intelligence moving within her.
Determination and inner discipline go to work.
THE LONG WAIT BENEATH THE SURFACE
The mother returns to the sea, and the eggs remain underneath the sand for approximately two months.
Not a few nights.
Two months of hidden development.
Nothing seems to be happening from above, but life is preparing underneath.
We should remember this when our own progress becomes invisible.
Just because nothing is showing does not mean nothing is growing.
THE STRUGGLE TO BEGIN
When the time arrives, the hatchlings break free from their shells.
That accomplishment is only the beginning.
They must work together through the sand, slowly rising toward the surface. Once they emerge—often under the protection of darkness—they must orient themselves toward the brightest natural horizon over the ocean.
Then they move.
They do not hold a meeting.
They do not request instructions.
They do not wait until they feel confident.
They move toward the water with everything they have.
WHO TOLD THEM?
There is an intelligence within them that says:
Go.
Move.
Find the water.
Do it now.
They obey it.
They enter life with purpose already operating inside them—even though they cannot possibly understand the journey waiting ahead.
Perhaps more of us should become acquainted with the direction already written within us.
ALL THAT EFFORT GUARANTEES NOTHING
The beach journey is dangerous.
Natural predators may be waiting on the sand, in the air and beneath the water. Some hatchlings will not travel very far. Others may reach the surf only to meet another danger there.
The few that continue into the open ocean enter what scientists sometimes call the “lost years,” because following their early lives is extremely difficult.
They remain on their own.
No parent swims beside them.
No turtle school prepares them.
No guarantee announces that they will become one of the giants.
VERY FEW BECOME ADULTS
Scientists know that very few sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood, although a single universal survival number cannot be assigned accurately to every species, beach and environment.
The hazards differ.
The weather differs.
The predators differ.
Human interference, artificial lighting, fishing gear, pollution and habitat loss create additional threats.
The exact odds may be uncertain, but the difficulty is not.
Every adult leatherback represents years of survival through a world that repeatedly could have ended its journey.
ON THEIR OWN FOR YEARS
Leatherbacks may take many years to reach maturity.
During that time, they cross enormous distances, search for food, avoid danger and grow within an ocean too vast for us to imagine.
Moment by moment.
Current by current.
Mile by mile.
They keep going.
THEIR SIZE TELLS THE STORY
When you see one of these giants moving majestically through the water, PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
Do not see only its present size.
See what it survived to become that size.
See the tiny hatchling beneath the giant.
See the first desperate crawl toward the water.
See the years of exposure, uncertainty and continued movement.
The adult turtle is not merely large.
It is living evidence that the beginning did not defeat it.
THE ODDS CANNOT CHOOSE THE WINNER
Who determines which hatchling survives?
No person standing on the beach can look across a nest and confidently select the future giant.
The smallest may make it.
The fastest may not.
The one temporarily knocked backward may correct its direction and continue.
Nature does not issue guarantees.
Neither does life.
The odds can describe the difficulty, but they cannot identify the winner beforehand.
HAVING A HARD TIME, ARE YOU?
I can relate.
This comparison is not intended to dismiss anyone’s pain or pretend that human difficulties are unimportant.
It is intended to restore perspective.
You have resources the hatchling does not:
You can learn.
You can plan.
You can ask for help.
You can change direction.
You can rest and begin again.
You can recognize danger before walking directly into it.
You can receive encouragement from people who want you to succeed.
The hatchling has only instinct and forward movement.
What might you accomplish with everything that has been given to you?
PROTECT THE JOURNEY
If you ever witness a sea turtle nesting or hatchlings emerging, admire them from a respectful distance. Keep the beach dark, avoid flash photography and never interfere unless authorized wildlife professionals provide direction.
Their journey is difficult enough without us making it harder.
FINAL THOUGHT
Every majestic adult was once a vulnerable beginner facing an uncertain first step.
Do not judge your future by the size, strength or circumstances of your beginning.
Begin anyway.
