Hair can hold a longer record than blood or urine in certain kinds of testing.

Hair testing is powerful in some areas…

and greatly misunderstood in others.

We all know about:

blood tests,

urine tests,

and other laboratory testing.

Blood can reveal quite a bit about what is happening in the body at the time it is drawn.

Urine testing can also reveal certain substances, infections, metabolic information and pregnancy-related hormones depending on what test is ordered.

But there is another specimen that has always fascinated me.

HAIR.

I first heard about hair testing many years ago and the idea stayed with me.

Why?

Because hair can preserve evidence of certain exposures for a much longer period than blood or urine.

That gets your attention.

THIS ONE CAN LOOK BACKWARD

Hair testing is used most notably in toxicology.

Certain drugs and their metabolites can become incorporated into growing hair.

Since scalp hair grows gradually…

a laboratory can sometimes use a segment of hair to look backward over a period of months.

A common 1.5-inch scalp-hair sample roughly represents about THREE MONTHS of growth.

Longer hair can sometimes provide a longer historical window depending on the test and laboratory method.

Here is what makes hair useful.

Once certain substances become incorporated into growing hair…

In that world…

and more about:

PRIVACY.

DISCRIMINATION.

HUMAN WORTH.

Who gets to know?

Who gets to decide what the information means?

Who controls the record?

THOSE are still very real questions.

SUPPOSE THIS IS KEPT ON FILE SOMEWHERE

Now we have reached the part of my original Pearl that remains very relevant.

Information creates responsibility.

A laboratory result is one thing.

A permanent database containing sensitive biological information is another.

The question becomes:

WHO OWNS IT?

WHO CAN ACCESS IT?

WHAT CAN THEY DO WITH IT?

HOW LONG DOES IT REMAIN?

That should concern us much more than some fantasy that a strand of hair reveals everything.

The danger is not unlimited testing power.

The danger can be:

limited information being given TOO MUCH power.

BIG DIFFERENCE.

PRIVACY STILL MATTERS

In the United States, genetic information receives certain protections.

For example, federal law limits the use of genetic information by many employers and health insurers.

But those protections are not absolute and do not cover every type of insurance or circumstance.

The hair-raising part is not:

HAIR KNOWS EVERYTHING.

It doesn’t.

Technology keeps improving our ability to measure biological information.

Hair testing can tell us quite a bit.
