There is gold within you—but potential does not mine itself.

Mind your growth.

Explore your gifts.

Develop your character.

Your personal stock goes up when you invest in the person carrying your name.

Distractions, temptations and comparison can pull our attention toward everyone’s life except our own.

We examine what other people possess.

Question their decisions.

Measure their progress.

Judge their mistakes.

Meanwhile, our own unfinished business remains patiently waiting.

There is a reason we are told to mind our own business.

It does not mean becoming selfish or unconcerned about others.

It means first accepting responsibility for our welfare, conduct, growth and direction.

Attention invested everywhere else can produce leakage and stagnation in personal development.

PAUSE FOR CAUSE.

Before attempting to manage another person’s life, make certain you have not abandoned your own.

MINE YOUR OWN BUSINESS

There is gold within the self.

Not financial gold necessarily, but a treasure chest containing gifts, lessons, abilities, values, resilience and possibilities.

Some of it is visible.

Much of it remains buried beneath fear, distraction, old assumptions and lack of use.

Your personal gold mine needs a miner:

A seeker.

An explorer.

Someone willing to enter, investigate, work and discover what has been waiting there.

That someone is you.

Potential does not mine itself.

YOUR PERSONAL STOCK

When you invest in self-awareness and character, your personal stock begins to rise.

Honesty develops.

Integrity takes root.

Confidence becomes more substantial because it rests upon effort rather than appearance.

Discipline strengthens.

You become more capable of applying your mind and heart to worthwhile purposes.

Everyone possesses possibilities—but possibilities must be exercised.

An unused gift does not disappear, but neither does it automatically mature.

It waits.

The longer it waits, the easier it becomes to mistake undeveloped potential for absence.

Do not say there is nothing within you simply because you have not yet entered the mine.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Mining your potential begins with questions:

What comes naturally to me?

What have difficult experiences taught me?

What kind of work gives me energy?

Which responsibilities do people trust me to handle?

Where do I repeatedly struggle?

What do I need to learn?

What have I postponed because I feared being a beginner?

Some discoveries will feel encouraging.

Others may reveal weaknesses, neglected responsibilities or habits that need attention.

All honest discoveries have value.

You cannot intentionally develop what you refuse to examine.

MINDING OTHERS

Once we find our center, invest in our inner life and become more capable of managing our circumstances, we can help others with their development.

This is the work of:

Teachers.

Coaches.

Counselors.

Mentors.

Parents.

Pastors.

Friends.

Their purpose is not to take over another person’s mine.

It is to help that person recognize the tools, possibilities and obstacles already present.

“Physician, heal yourself” contains wisdom—but it should not be misused to suggest that everyone must heal alone.

People need help.

We need teachers, physicians, therapists, advisers, friends and faith communities.

Personal responsibility and outside assistance are not opposites.

The best help strengthens our ability to participate in our own growth.

YOUR PORTION

I believe we are sent here with the capacity to learn, grow and participate meaningfully in life.

Apply what I call the Richie Reverse Rule:

Were we sent here merely to be defeated?

That makes no sense.

Why would we receive gifts, curiosity, conscience and the ability to learn if none of them were meant to be used?

This does not mean everyone begins with equal resources or faces equal circumstances.

Life can be unfair.

People encounter illness, poverty, trauma, prejudice, disability and loss through no personal failure.

Yet even when circumstances limit our options, they do not erase our worth.

Some answers will arise within.

Others will come through people, education, faith, treatment and opportunity.

Wisdom knows how to receive from both directions.

TREASURE NO THIEF CAN TAKE

Skills can be practiced.

Character can deepen.

Wisdom can grow.

Compassion can become stronger.

These are forms of wealth that cannot be stolen in the ordinary way.

A job may end.

A possession may be lost.

A plan may fail.

But what you learned, how you grew and the character formed through the experience can remain.

This inner wealth travels with you.

It becomes part of the person who faces the next opportunity.

SELF-DISCOVERY

The first experience of anything contains wonder.

A first attempt.

A new insight.

A discovery about ourselves that had been waiting for the right moment.

I continue having learning experiences to this day.

They seem never-ending, and I still respond with awe when something new becomes clear.

Children naturally participate in discovery.

They ask questions.

Experiment.

Fall.

Get up.

Try again.

Adults sometimes drift away from that system because we dislike looking inexperienced.

But every expert was once unfamiliar with the subject.

Do not let pride prevent the next discovery.

LOOK AROUND

Nearly everyone you meet is pursuing some version of well-being, belonging, security, purpose or love.

People approach these needs according to their circumstances, understanding and timing.

Their methods may differ from ours.

Their stories certainly do.

Remember also that few of us arrived where we are entirely by ourselves.

Someone taught us.

Encouraged us.

Corrected us.

Opened a door.

Shared information.

Offered an opportunity.

Prayed for us.

Believed in us before we could clearly believe in ourselves.

Self-development is personal.

It is rarely solitary.

WHILE WORKING YOUR CAUSE

While minding and mining your business, keep an eye open for someone who may need encouragement, information or a reasonable boost.

Why?

Because the measure we use toward others has a way of shaping what surrounds us.

Generosity encourages generosity.

Respect teaches respect.

Cruelty multiplies injury.

The support we provide does not guarantee an identical return, but it helps create the kind of world in which support remains possible.

Help without controlling.

Encourage without pretending to know everything.

Share what you have learned without requiring another person to copy your path.

At no time should personal advancement require deliberately harming someone else.

MAY ALL GO WELL WITH YOU

Do not marvel that I wish you well.

I want your happiness, development and honest prosperity.

I believe the One who sent you here also desires that you grow, learn and discover the meaning within your life.

The mystery is not solved from a distance.

It is solved—or at least better understood—by living.

Live deeply.

Participate fully.

Examine what each experience is revealing.

THE RICHIE REVERSE RULE

When fear says:

“There is nothing valuable within me,”

reverse it:

“What if something valuable is waiting to be developed?”

When failure says:

“I cannot do this,”

ask:

“What has this attempt taught me about the next one?”

When comparison says:

“Everyone else is ahead,”

respond:

“Their path is not my assignment.”

The Richie Reverse Rule does not deny reality.

It searches reality for the possibility fear overlooked.

FINAL THOUGHT

Minding your own business does not mean ignoring the world.

It means becoming responsible for the part of the world entrusted to you:

Your conduct.

Your gifts.

Your growth.

Your choices.

Mine that territory faithfully.

Then bring something valuable from within it to share.

PEARLS INSIGHT (SEO)

Personal growth begins with self-awareness, responsibility and the consistent development of character, skills and natural abilities. Reducing unhealthy comparison creates more attention for meaningful goals, while mentors, education, faith and professional support can help us discover and develop our potential.

PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS

Pearls for the Soul encourages readers to explore the wealth carried within:

Wisdom gained through experience.

Character built through choices.

Gifts strengthened through use.

Potential becomes valuable when it is recognized, developed and shared.

PEARLS CONNECTION

What valuable part of yourself remains underdeveloped?

A creative ability?

Leadership?

Patience?

Communication?

Faith?

Courage?

Do not condemn the unopened mine.

Pick up one tool and begin exploring.

RICHIE SPEAKS

Mind your business—and then mine it.

There may be gold hiding beneath the excuses, distractions and comparisons.

LOL—unfortunately, the mine does not accept complaints as excavation equipment.

Bring curiosity.

Bring effort.

Bring patience.

FINAL SAY

There is gold within you—but potential does not mine itself.

Mind your growth.

Explore your gifts.

Develop your character.

Accept help.

Help others without controlling them.

Your personal stock rises whenever you invest wisely in the person carrying your name.
