Some choices hurt now and heal later. Others please us now and quietly prepare tomorrow’s pain.
The title of this posting will travel with you throughout your earthly lifetime.
SHORT-TERM PAIN, LONG-TERM PLEASURE.
It offers a helpful way to navigate life and make the difficult decisions that eventually visit us all.
Instead of choosing by impulse, fear or hit-and-miss thinking, examine where each available road is likely to lead.
Do not ask only:
How will this choice feel today?
Also ask:
What will this choice build tomorrow?
LIFE ENCOUNTERS
Where can we go to escape misery, sorrow, disappointment, loss, pain and every other discomfort of life?
There is no such place.
Life contains both pleasure and pain. Since we cannot completely escape what hurts, we must learn how to travel through it without allowing woe to have its permanent way with us.
Woe unto us?
No!
We can acknowledge difficulty without building our home inside it.
THE CROSSROADS
At certain crossroads, we must do two things:
- Learn how to navigate what life has presented.
- Rise above what is trying to pull us down.
Avoiding a decision is sometimes a decision in itself. Delay may preserve today’s comfort while increasing tomorrow’s cost.
The difficult road is not automatically the correct road—but the easy road is not automatically the wise one either.

THE INEVITABLE CALCULATION
Before choosing, consider the following:
- What are the likely gains and losses?
- Is the risk reasonable, necessary or avoidable?
- Which choice protects what matters most?
- What happens if I do nothing?
- Am I choosing temporary comfort at the expense of my future?
- Will today’s sacrifice create greater freedom, health, peace or opportunity later?
Sometimes life does not offer a painless choice. It asks us to select the more constructive of two difficult alternatives.
Accept that reality, calculate carefully and move with purpose.
THE SHORT-TERM PAIN PRINCIPLE
Short-term pain may mean:
Having the honest conversation.
Ending an unhealthy pattern.
Saving instead of spending.
Exercising when the couch is calling.
Returning to school.
Admitting a mistake.
Setting a boundary.
Requesting professional help.
Leaving what is familiar but damaging.
Beginning again.
The temporary discomfort has value only when it serves a worthy destination.
Pain by itself is not progress.
Pain attached to wisdom, purpose and constructive action can become part of progress.
LOOK WHERE YOU WILL LAND
When an undesirable choice arrives at the forefront, examine its destination.
Where are you likely to land when the experience has completed its cycle?
Will you be healthier?
Wiser?
Freer?
More peaceful?
Better prepared?
More honest with yourself?
Some consequences come from earlier decisions and must now be addressed.
So be it.
Face what is yours, learn what it came to teach and choose the next responsible step.
THIS TOO SHALL PASS
Often, the best course of action travels with an obvious pain-buddy.
Choose the temporary difficulty when it genuinely leads somewhere better. Then remember:
This too shall pass.
When the demanding season completes its cycle, you may discover more than relief waiting at the other end.
Your character may be stronger.
Your courage may have increased.
Your confidence may have grown.
Your skills bank may have received another valuable deposit.
You proved that fear could speak without being permitted to make the decision.
Yay!
THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LIFE
Success and failure.
Loss and gain.
Sorrow and happiness.
Sickness and health.
Pain and pleasure.
All receive their turn.
Some experiences take a bite out of us. Others invite us to take a bite out of life.
Neither the high nor the low remains forever.
Our assignment is to appreciate the high without believing it makes us invincible—and endure the low without believing it makes us worthless.
SEEK LEVEL GROUND
Every new high may reveal the possibility of a new low.
What then?
Seek level ground.
Level ground does not mean a lifeless existence. It means building enough balance that every success does not carry you away and every disappointment does not destroy your footing.
Learn to cruise without the bruise.
Enjoy the climb, respect the descent and keep your hands on the controls.
MAKE GOOD USE OF THESE
OPPORTUNITIES
Sometimes opportunity knocks.
Sometimes it passes quietly and expects you to notice.
Be on the lookout.
YOUR OPTIMUM
Give the best available to you in this moment.
Tomorrow’s best may be different. Today’s honest best is enough for today.
TIME
We all take time for granted, yet the clock never stops ticking.
Spend some of it on the future you claim to want.
THE FIRST STEP
Where you place your first step influences your direction of travel.
You do not need to see the entire road before beginning—but you should know whether your first step points toward or away from the life you value.
Travel well.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL
Do not forget what it was like to be a child.
I am speaking of the FUN part.
Large portions of carefree living.
Simplicity.
Curiosity.
Hope built into your existence without having to ask for it.
Responsible living does not require us to become permanently grim.
The child is still there.
It asks:
Where are you?
Perhaps some short-term pain comes from releasing what made life unnecessarily heavy. Perhaps long-term pleasure includes returning to wonder, laughter and the freedom to enjoy being alive.
FINAL THOUGHT
A wise choice is not always the one that feels best immediately.
Some choices hurt now and heal later. Others please us now and quietly prepare tomorrow’s pain.
Look beyond the moment.
Calculate the destination.
Choose what builds tomorrow.
PEARLS INSIGHT (SEO)
Choosing short-term discomfort for long-term benefit is a practical decision-making strategy. By weighing risks, consequences and future outcomes, we can make healthier choices, overcome fear, build resilience and create lasting personal growth.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
The principle of delayed gratification appears throughout philosophy, psychology, faith and everyday life: self-control today can protect freedom tomorrow.
Wisdom does not demand suffering for suffering’s sake. It teaches us to accept necessary effort when that effort serves a worthwhile future.
PEARLS CONNECTION
What temporary discomfort have you been avoiding?
If you faced it responsibly now, what long-term freedom might become possible?
RICHIE SPEAKS
Do not choose pain merely because it is painful. Choose the difficult road when you have examined it honestly and know it leads somewhere worth going.
FINAL SAY
Temporary discomfort may be the admission price to a better destination.
Pay wisely—and travel well.
