Look inward and you find mysteries.
Look outward and you find more.
Perhaps “How did we get here?” is not merely a question to be answered—but an invitation to become humble enough to behold the answer.
One person says we came out of the ocean.
Another says we crawled from beneath some slimy rock.
Another says we are the product of the Big Bang.
If all you want is a quick answer to a deep and mysterious question, perhaps one of those will do.
But “Where did we come from?” is an age-old question—one that reaches across centuries, civilizations, science, philosophy and faith.
What many people do not realize is that the question demands respect, humility and one final dynamic:
Revelation.
Some things must be explored. Some must be experienced. And some, perhaps, must be revealed.
WORTHY NOTE: No doctrine, please. Just explorers, inquisitors and the curious.
GUESSES AND OPINIONS
This is not a game-show question, and our existence is not a casual subject.
We live upon a planet suspended in space, tilted and rotating, filled with countless forms of life connected through systems that keep existence moving.
Air, water, soil, sunlight, plants, animals and human beings participate in relationships larger than any single one of us.
We can see these things.
Understanding all of them?
That is where awe visits—and our eyebrows should go up.
SCIENTISTS SCRATCH THEIR HEADS OFTEN
Here is what fascinates me:
As we approach one mystery, we frequently discover another. If we persist, we find mysteries within mysteries.
That is why we have specialized fields of study. One person explores a small part, reaches the edge of present understanding and hands the question to another person who may take it farther.
Discovery becomes a relay race through generations.
The more we learn, the more territory appears before us.

PAUSE FOR CAUSE: Knowledge does not always eliminate mystery. Sometimes knowledge introduces us properly.
MEDICAL MARVELS
Thousands of years ago, people did not understand why the body became sick or why life ended when it did.
Studying the inside of the human body was restricted or forbidden in many places and periods. Yet the questions remained:
What is inside us?
What does each part do?
How does it all work together?
Today we possess knowledge earlier generations could scarcely imagine. Yet physicians and researchers continue to confront the powerful boundary of:
“We do not know—yet.”
That small word yet has opened many doors.
THE PARTS WITHIN US
Human beings were familiar with what could be seen on the outside.
The inside was another world.
Organs, blood vessels, nerves, bones and countless cellular processes operate in cooperation. Each performs its function while depending upon the others.
The early explorers of anatomy entered frightening and sometimes forbidden territory. Some risked their reputations, freedom and lives to learn what was hidden beneath the skin.
What they uncovered answered questions—and produced many more.
WORTHY NOTE: DNA carries detailed biological instructions used by living cells. The science is extraordinary. The existence of such ordered instruction also invites Richie’s questions:
How?
Why?
And where did the possibility of all this order begin?
Science investigates the process. Spiritual awe considers its meaning.
They need not be enemies at the door.
MICROCOSM AND MACROCOSM
Turn in any direction and a mystery awaits—seen or unseen.
Look inward through a microscope.
Look outward through a telescope.
We live surrounded by forces and systems we did not create, many of which are necessary for our continued existence.
They were here before we arrived.
They will likely continue after we depart.
Handled correctly, this reality should produce humility—not arrogance—and respect for powers, processes and possibilities greater than our present understanding.
No two human beings are exactly alike.
Even identical twins do not live identical lives.
The mind boggles.
As it should.
ACCIDENTS OF LIFE?
An accident is usually an unplanned event.
Now consider the complexity of our earthly journey.
Life exists through an astonishing arrangement of conditions, relationships and processes. We arrive and find air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, ground to walk upon and a sun providing energy.
We did not place them here.
We simply arrived and began using them.
It is almost as though we walked into a furnished house and immediately started arguing about who owns the furniture. LOL.
Does existence appear to be nothing more than happenstance?
You must explore that question for yourself.
But at the very least, life certainly behaves like a gift.
WHEN WE CONSIDER OTHER PLANETS
Our unanswered questions about Earth led us to study other planets.
What would we find?
Other worlds like ours? Different forms of life? Something beyond anything imagined?
So far, Earth remains the only world known to support life as we know it. That does not close the question—it makes the question even larger.
Why life here?
Could it exist elsewhere?
What remains beyond our ability to detect?
A telescope gives us a closer look, but a closer look often reveals a farther horizon.
The mystery does not end.
WORTHY NOTE: What about other solar systems, galaxies and possibilities beyond what we presently understand?
The numbers overwhelm us.
Then the numbers themselves become another mystery.
WHEN WE CONSIDER WHAT WE CANNOT SEE
Tiny organisms may live upon and within us.
Bacteria participate in the functioning of our bodies. Cells reproduce and perform specialized work without asking for our conscious permission.
Look deeper and we encounter molecules, atoms and subatomic particles.
A microscope reveals what our eyes cannot see.
But once again, every enlargement presents another doorway.
Large or small, inward or outward, the invitation remains:
Keep looking.
Keep asking.
Keep your humility nearby.
THE TITLE OF THIS POST
How did we get here?
Choose a field of study, and the mystery continues beyond it.
Choose a philosophy, and another question waits.
Choose faith, and faith itself asks you to enter more deeply.
We are mysteries living upon a mysterious planet, surrounded by other planets, stars and galaxies extending into distances that challenge imagination.
Perhaps all of this points toward a grander source—a maker of mysteries who knows that a little wonder keeps the human soul awake.
And I must say:
This mystery maker sure does a great job.
PEARLS INSIGHT
Awe is not ignorance.
Awe is what happens when knowledge becomes large enough to recognize its own horizon.
RICHIE SPEAKS
You do not have to stop questioning in order to believe.
And you do not have to stop believing in order to question.
Bring respect. Bring humility. Bring curiosity.
Then let awe visit.
FINAL SAY
Perhaps we have not been given every answer because the search itself is part of the gift.
Look through the microscope.
Look through the telescope.
Then look within.
You may not discover exactly how we got here today—but you may discover how magnificent “here” truly is.
