A ship is safest in the harbor.

But ships were never built for harbors.

Neither were you.

THE SHIP IN THE HARBOR

A beautiful ship sat quietly in the harbor.

Protected.

Secure.

Safe.

The waters around it were calm.

No storms.

No waves.

No uncertainty.

No risk.

And yet something was wrong.

The ship was not fulfilling its purpose.

It was built to cross oceans.

Built to face wind.

Built to navigate storms.

Built to discover new horizons.

Built to carry precious cargo.

The harbor protected it.

But the harbor could never fulfill it.

THE COMFORT TRAP

Many people unknowingly live their lives in the harbor.

They stay where everything is familiar.

Where everything is predictable.

Where everything feels safe.

And while there is nothing wrong with safety, there is something wrong with allowing safety to become a prison.

Dreams remain dreams.

Talents remain unused.

Purposes remain undiscovered.

Potential remains untapped.

THE PEARLS CONNECTION

Throughout Pearls for the Soul there is a recurring theme:

Growth almost always requires movement.

Faith requires movement.

Learning requires movement.

Purpose requires movement.

Even the seed must leave its present condition before it can become a tree.

Everything that grows eventually leaves its comfort zone.

WHY WE STAY

Fear.

Fear of failure.

Fear of criticism.

Fear of rejection.

Fear of looking foolish.

Fear of making mistakes.

Fear whispers:

“Stay where you are.”

Faith whispers:

“Take the next step.”

The battle between those two voices determines many destinies.

THE STORMS

People often assume that storms are proof they are going the wrong direction.

Sometimes the opposite is true.

A ship that never leaves the harbor never encounters storms.

It also never discovers new lands.

Never fulfills its purpose.

Never becomes what it was designed to become.

Storms are often part of the journey.

Not evidence against it.

RICHIE SPEAKING…

You were not created merely to exist.

You were created to live.

To grow.

To serve.

To love.

To contribute.

To discover what God placed inside you.

There are seasons for resting in the harbor.

But there are also seasons for raising the sails.

Maybe this is one of those seasons.

Maybe it is time to stop staring at the horizon.

And start sailing toward it.

The harbor is safe.

But your purpose is waiting beyond it.
