The most valuable thing you can give another person is not bought in a store.
It is YOU.
Your time.
Your presence.
Your attention.
Your care.
People tend to forget that the gift of self is the most highly prized possession one person can give to another.
This is the true coin of this realm.
And we are wise to spend it while we have it.
The things of this world belong to the world.
But the things that come FROM people…
carry another kind of value.
THINGS OF VALUE
Look at a dollar bill.
Jewelry.
A watch.
A keepsake.
By themselves, they are simply things.
But if that dollar was the first one you ever earned…
or that watch belonged to your father…
or that necklace came from your mother…
or that little object marked a special occasion…
suddenly it is no longer just material.
Now it carries MEMORY.
Now it carries PEOPLE.
Now it carries MEANING.
The value changes because a human being entered the story.
ONE TO ANOTHER
Leaving behind wealth is how the world often measures success.
Fine.
But what I consider more valuable is the giving of one person’s TIME to another.
That can be anything.
A smile.
A conversation.
A favor.
A ride.
A phone call.
A visit.
A meal.
A word of encouragement.
An inheritance.
Even when money is involved, when a person adds themselves to the transaction…
it becomes more memorable.
There is a difference between:
“Here.”
and
“I thought of you.”
That difference is the gift of self.
HEY…REMEMBER?
Think about the people you remember fondly.
Grandma.
Grandpa.
Mom.
Dad.
A friend.
A teacher.
A coworker.
A stranger who said something at exactly the right time.
What do you remember?
Usually not the dollar amount.
Usually not the price tag.
You remember:
what they said,
what they did,
how they helped,
how they made you feel,
how they showed up.
A recipe.
A conversation.
A kindness.
A helping hand.
A little bit of patience.
Those are the things that keep living.
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
We are often remembered in fragments.
A phrase.
A smile.
A habit.
A gesture.
A moment.
And yet those little things can become enormous after we are gone.
PEOPLE ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT
People keep objects because objects hold memories.
A photograph.
A watch.
A ring.
A handwritten note.
A ticket stub.
A shell.
A favorite chair.
The object acts like a doorway.
You touch it…
and suddenly a person walks back into the room.
That is the real power of keepsakes.
The material is not the treasure.
The HUMAN connection is.
OH I JUST LOVE THOSE MATERIALS
Nobody looks at a diamond and thinks:
“What a magnificent mine shaft.”
LOL.
Nobody holds a stack of money and begins meditating on the printing press.
Nobody admires a painting and says:
“What wonderful canvas fibers.”
No.
We think about:
who gave it,
who made it,
who wore it,
where we were,
what happened,
what it meant.
Material things become important because PEOPLE gave them meaning.
ICONS…REPRESENTATION OF A PERSON, PLACE OR THING
A watch.
Pictures.
Lucky charms.
Flowers.
Flags.
Trips.
Landmarks.
Nature.
All of these can become icons.
They represent something beyond themselves.
They point.
They remind.
They carry memory.
And that is why symbols matter.
They help us remember what cannot always be held directly.
MY FAVORITE
My favorite example is the CROSS and what it represents.
Not because of the wood.
Not because of the shape alone.
Because of what the symbol carries in memory and meaning.
That is what all powerful symbols do.
They carry something larger than the material itself.
THE TRUE COIN
This is why the gift of self matters so much.
Time is limited.
Attention is limited.
Presence is limited.
And once given sincerely…
it cannot be duplicated in exactly the same way.
You can replace money.
You can replace furniture.
You can replace many objects.
You cannot replace a moment.
You cannot re-create the exact conversation.
You cannot rewind a day and give somebody your presence again.
That makes TIME and SELF incredibly valuable.
