Most people are moved by reward.

Others are moved by fear.

But there is a third way.

A better way.

A way that comes from within.

The carrot and the stick.

Most of us have heard this expression all our lives.

One motivates through reward.

The other motivates through fear.

Both are designed to keep us moving forward.

Both can be effective.

But neither represents the highest form of living.

WHY?

Because both come from outside of you.

PAIN AND PLEASURE…
PLEASURE AND PAIN.

The carrot appeals to desire.

It promises a reward.

A promotion.

Recognition.

Money.

Approval.

Comfort.

The carrot says:

“Keep going and you will get something.”

The stick operates differently.

The stick uses consequences.

Pressure.

Fear.

Urgency.

The stick says:

“Keep going or something unpleasant will happen.”

Both systems work.

Businesses use them.

Governments use them.

Parents use them.

Schools use them.

Life itself uses them.

The question is not whether they work.

The question is whether you need them.

KNOW THYSELF.

The greatest source of power is not the carrot.

The greatest source of power is not the stick.

The greatest source of power is awareness.

Self-awareness.

Self-discipline.

Self-discovery.

Self-respect.

Self-realization.

The ability to see things clearly and act accordingly.

When you understand who you are and where you are going, external rewards become less important.

When you understand consequences, external punishments become less necessary.

You begin guiding yourself.

That is maturity.

THERE IS AN INNER GUIDANCE SYSTEM.

We arrived here with something remarkable.

Call it common sense.

Call it conscience.

Call it wisdom.

Call it inner knowing.

Whatever name you give it, it is there.

It quietly guides.

It nudges.

It warns.

It suggests.

It corrects.

It encourages.

Most people have experienced it.

The problem is not that it is absent.

The problem is that it is often ignored.

WHY DO WE IGNORE IT?

Because shortcuts are tempting.

Because impatience is tempting.

Because immediate gratification is tempting.

Because fear can be louder than wisdom.

Because emotions can drown out reason.

Because ego does not like being told it is wrong.

The result?

We stop listening.

And over time, the inner voice becomes harder to hear.

USE IT OR LOSE IT.

I have noticed something.

People who consistently ignore their common sense tend to become more dependent upon outside forces.

They need constant motivation.

Constant encouragement.

Constant supervision.

Constant reminders.

Meanwhile, people who practice listening to themselves grow stronger.

More confident.

More centered.

More reliable.

More trustworthy.

The difference is not intelligence.

The difference is practice.

FAITH ACTIVATES THE SYSTEM.

Faith is not blind optimism.

Faith is trusting what you already know to be true.

Faith is taking the next step when common sense says proceed.

Faith is remaining patient when impatience wants control.

Faith is believing that doing the right thing still matters.

As I wrote in God I AM:

“The answers often arrive after obedience begins.”

The inner guidance system grows stronger every time it is honored.

EVERY DAY OFFERS A CHOICE.

You can be driven by the carrot.

You can be driven by the stick.

Or you can be guided by something greater.

Your conscience.

Your common sense.

Your character.

Your inner knowing.

The first two will move you.

The third will transform you.

WHAT THEN?

Use rewards when appropriate.

Respect consequences when necessary.

But cultivate something deeper.

Become the type of person who does the right thing because it is right.

Not because someone is watching.

Not because there is a reward.

Not because there is a punishment.

But because your inner guidance system has become alive and well.

The carrot may move the animal.

The stick may move the reluctant.

But awareness…

Awareness moves the human being.
