Gold shines on the surface.

Wisdom is buried deep.

One attracts your eyes.

The other transforms your life.

Most people know what gold is.

Its value is recognized throughout the world.

Men have crossed deserts for it.

Sailed oceans for it.

Climbed mountains for it.

Fought wars over it.

Built fortunes from it.

But what about Fool’s Gold?

Fool’s Gold is a collection of minerals that resemble gold.

At first glance, it looks valuable.

It sparkles.

It catches your attention.

It excites the inexperienced eye.

But it is not what it appears to be.

That got me thinking.

If there is Fool’s Gold…

What exactly is a fool?

Gold prospectors learned long ago that the easiest discoveries are often the least valuable.

A few traces of gold may be found near the surface.

Enough to encourage you.

Enough to keep you looking.

But those searching for real wealth keep digging.

They go deeper.

They study.

They persist.

They endure harsh weather.

Long days.

Hard work.

Discomfort.

Eventually, some discover what miners call the Mother Lode.

The source.

The treasure beneath the treasure.

The place where real value resides.

Life works much the same way.

We find ourselves living on a planet spinning through space among countless stars and galaxies.

Pause for a moment and consider that.

The mystery alone should keep us occupied for a lifetime.

Look around.

Clouds.

Mountains.

Forests.

Oceans.

Animals.

Weather.

Sunrises.

Human beings.

Love.

Consciousness.

Life itself.

Everywhere you look, questions are waiting to be asked.

If the stars do not fascinate you…

Look into a microscope.

The mystery remains.

There are people who see these things and become curious.

They ask questions.

They seek answers.

They wonder WHY.

They wonder HOW.

Something inside them comes alive.

Their journey has begun.

They have become miners.

Not of gold.

But of understanding.

As I often say:

The person asking questions is already halfway to discovering treasure.

Others, however, spend their lives chasing surface distractions.

One entertainment after another.

One possession after another.

One temporary excitement after another.

Busy.

Always busy.

Yet somehow never fulfilled.

They collect information but gain little wisdom.

They consume but rarely digest.

They see but do not observe.

They hear but do not listen.

They are mining Fool’s Gold.

The deeper journey begins when we stop looking outward long enough to look inward.

Why do I think the way I do?

Why do I react the way I do?

Why do I fear certain things?

Why do I love certain things?

Why am I here?

Questions like these are not signs of weakness.

They are signs of awakening.

The deeper you dig, the more valuable the discoveries become.

Character begins to form.

Wisdom begins to emerge.

Understanding begins to replace confusion.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“The greatest treasures are not hidden in the earth. They are hidden within the human soul.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

A fool is not someone lacking intelligence.

Some of the smartest people in the world can behave foolishly.

A fool is often someone who refuses to look deeper.

Someone satisfied with appearances.

Someone content with imitation instead of truth.

Someone who mistakes glitter for value.

The wise person keeps digging.

Keeps asking.

Keeps seeking.

Keeps growing.

Every great discovery begins with curiosity.

Every breakthrough begins with a question.

Every treasure begins with a search.

Do not spend your life collecting Fool’s Gold.

Dig deeper than that.

Explore the mysteries of the microcosm and the macrocosm.

Explore the stars.

Explore the oceans.

Explore your heart.

Explore your purpose.

Because hidden beneath the surface of your life is something infinitely more valuable than gold.

The Mother Lode.

The treasure called understanding.

And once discovered…

It enriches everything.
