PETTY THINGS ARE EXPENSIVE.
They steal:
attention,
time,
awareness,
and sometimes…
MEANING.
If it matters, stay with it.
I am talking about PETTY.
Petty anything.
Petty distractions.
Petty interruptions.
Petty noise.
Anything that pulls us away from what is actually relevant.
A meaningful and rewarding life usually requires:
depth,
involvement,
stillness,
attention,
and pursuit.
And today…
technology can compete with every one of those.
Not because technology is automatically bad.
NO.
Because anything that constantly demands attention can begin deciding what receives our attention.
That is worth noticing.

WHERE ARE YOU?
Look around.
People are:
walking,
eating,
waiting,
working,
traveling,
exercising…
with their attention somewhere else.
The body is HERE.
The mind is THERE.
The eyes are on a screen.
The ears are occupied.
The emotions are responding to something happening somewhere else.
Meanwhile…
the actual moment is sitting there saying:
HELLO?
LOL.
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
Where are YOU?
Not physically.
MENTALLY.
FOCUS…NOT OBSESSION
Attention is limited.
You can divide it.
But every division costs something.
If you are:
watching,
typing,
listening,
scrolling,
responding,
and trying to experience real life
all at once…
something gets less of you.
Usually everything.
That does not mean:
THROW AWAY THE PHONE.
It means:
USE IT DELIBERATELY.
Technology should serve the moment.
Not erase it.
DON’T FORGET WHERE YOU ARE
I notice this while exercising.
People are surrounded by:
sky,
trees,
mountains,
sunlight,
weather,
other people,
movement…
and yet remain buried in their phones.
Now…
if you need to answer something?
Fine.
Answer it.
Go there.
Then COME BACK.
That is the point.
Do not leave the moment…
and forget to return.
BUSY OR PREOCCUPIED?
There is a difference.
Busy can mean:
productive.
Preoccupied means:
your attention has been captured.
That happens:
in lines,
at dinner,
at theaters,
while traveling,
at work,
during conversations,
even while sitting with family.
The phone is no longer merely a tool.
Sometimes it becomes another person at the table.
And often…
it gets more attention than the humans sitting there.
That deserves examination.
THE VALUE OF EMPTY SPACE
People need some unoccupied time.
Not constant stimulation.
Not every second filled.
Reflection requires space.
Creativity requires space.
Self-awareness requires space.
Sometimes even simple peace requires:
NOTHING HAPPENING FOR A MINUTE.
LOL.
If every quiet moment is immediately filled with:
scrolling,
checking,
watching,
reading,
responding…
when does the mind get to settle?
When do YOU get to show up?
CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER…BUT BOTH?
Some activities require full attention.
Driving is one.
Operating equipment.
Crossing traffic.
Certain kinds of work.
Important conversations.
If the moment demands you…
give yourself to the moment.
Trying to live in two places at once usually means neither receives your best.
And sometimes divided attention is not merely inconvenient.
It can be dangerous.
That is where discipline stops being philosophical…
and becomes practical.
SMALL TALK IS NAMED WELL
Now let us talk about social media.
There is nothing wrong with:
small talk,
humor,
updates,
pictures,
entertainment.
Those have their place.
But do not confuse every exchange with meaningful connection.
A hundred comments are not automatically intimacy.
A thousand likes are not automatically friendship.
Noise is not automatically conversation.
Activity is not automatically meaning.
That distinction matters.
THE PLATFORM WANTS YOUR ATTENTION
This is where the business model becomes relevant.
Many digital platforms benefit when people remain engaged longer.
More attention can mean:
more activity,
more data,
more opportunities to show advertising,
and more chances to keep the user returning.
That does not mean every app is some evil conspiracy.
It means the platform may have goals…
and YOU should have goals too.
The question becomes:
WHO IS USING WHOM?
That is worth asking.
THE MASK
Virtual interaction can be useful.
Extremely useful.
It can:
connect distant people,
teach,
inform,
entertain,
build communities,
and open opportunities.
But it can also create the appearance of connection without much depth.
That is the mask.
It looks like:
relationship,
involvement,
participation,
meaning…
but sometimes is only:
contact.
Contact and connection are not identical.
Neither are:
visibility and significance.
REACTION IS NOT REFLECTION
Technology is built for speed.
Reaction.
Click.
Swipe.
Reply.
Next.
But some parts of life require slowness.
Thinking.
Listening.
Understanding.
Grieving.
Learning.
Loving.
Planning.
Those things do not always fit into:
NOW NOW NOW.
Some truths take a while to reach you.
You have to be still long enough for them to arrive.
RELEVANT FIRST
Here is my point.
Ask:
IS THIS RELEVANT?
If yes…
then it deserves attention.
If it deserves attention…
it may become important.
What remains important long enough…
can develop meaning.
And meaning…
can eventually reveal purpose.
There is a progression here.
RELEVANCE.
IMPORTANCE.
MEANING.
PURPOSE.
That is very different from:
DISTRACTION.
NOISE.
REACTION.
NEXT.
Which road are we walking?
DO NOT LET PETTY THINGS BECOME EXPENSIVE
Petty distractions look cheap.
Five minutes here.
Three minutes there.
One quick look.
One more scroll.
No big deal.
But multiply it.
Hours.
Days.
Years.
Now the cost becomes visible.
Attention spent on one thing…
cannot be spent somewhere else at the same time.
That is the hidden price.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Here is one Richie rule:
Do not give ten-dollar attention to ten-cent distractions.
Another:
Go into the phone when you need it…
then COME BACK.
And one more:
If everything gets your attention…
nothing gets your depth.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
From the spirit of Pearls for the Soul:
“What receives sustained attention often becomes larger inside the life of the person giving it.”
From the spirit of God I AM:
“Stillness makes room for what noise can easily cover.”
From the spirit of It Is Finished:
“Release the unnecessary distraction when it begins competing with what truly matters.”
PEARLS INSIGHT
Attention is a limited resource.
When it is constantly fragmented, people may find it harder to:
reflect,
focus,
remember,
listen deeply,
and remain fully present.
Technology is most useful when it supports intentional activity rather than automatically filling every empty moment.
The goal is not digital rejection.
It is digital discipline.
Use the tool.
Do not surrender the steering wheel.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This connects directly with I FORGOT MY PHONE…WHAT AN EXPERIENCE—TRY IT.
Sometimes stepping away from constant availability reveals how much attention had been occupied.
It also connects with USE TECHNOLOGY…DON’T LET IT USE YOU.
The tool should serve the person.
And PEOPLE WHO KNOW THEIR BUSINESS…TALK TO THE POINT reminds us that relevance matters because unnecessary noise weakens communication.
FINAL SAY
If it is relevant…
pay attention.
If it is important…
stay with it.
If it carries meaning…
go deeper.
If it reveals purpose…
LIVE IT.
But petty things?
Treat them accordingly.
Not everything deserves:
your eyes,
your ears,
your emotions,
your time,
your energy.
Technology is useful.
Keep it.
Use it.
Enjoy it.
But remember where you are.
Look up.
Come back.
Listen.
Notice.
Be available to your actual life.
Because when distraction becomes the default…
meaning starts getting crowded out.
And there is no substitute for reality.
Only distractions pretending to be more important than it.
RELEVANCE.
IMPORTANCE.
MEANING.
PURPOSE.
That road is worth staying on.
