Most people spend a lifetime deciding what to leave behind.
Money.
Property.
Jewelry.
Investments.
But the greatest inheritance was never found in a will.
It was found in a person.

KNOWING and BEING KNOWN
Every time I see advertisements for estate planning, trusts, inheritances, and wealth transfers, I find myself reflecting on something deeper.
There is nothing wrong with leaving material things behind.
In fact, good stewardship requires it.
But I often wonder if we spend more time planning what happens to our possessions than what happens to our influence.
Because when all is said and done, the greatest thing you can leave behind is not what you owned.
It is who you were.
REMEMBER?
Think back for a moment.
Who are the people you remember most fondly?
A grandmother?
A grandfather?
A favorite teacher?
A coach?
A parent?
A neighbor?
What do you remember?
Do you remember their checking account?
Their stock portfolio?
The square footage of their home?
Probably not.
You remember their smile.
Their laugh.
Their kindness.
Their stories.
The way they made you feel.
The wisdom they shared.
The time they gave.
That is the real inheritance.
THE TRUE COIN OF THIS REALM
Throughout my life I have come to believe that people are the real treasure.
Not things.
People.
As I have written throughout the Pearls Series:
“The greatest treasure you will ever discover is another human being.”
What if that human being is you?
What if your greatest contribution to the world is not something you leave behind…
But the version of yourself you shared while you were here?
Your encouragement.
Your patience.
Your humor.
Your wisdom.
Your example.
Your character.
Those things appreciate in value long after you are gone.
LEAVE BEHIND YOURSELF
If you want to leave something valuable behind, leave behind memories.
Leave behind laughter.
Leave behind lessons.
Leave behind examples.
Leave behind kindness.
Leave behind stories.
Leave behind experiences.
Go fishing.
Play catch.
Bake cookies.
Take walks.
Tell stories.
Read books together.
Watch sunsets.
Have conversations.
These things seem ordinary while they are happening.
Years later they become priceless.
THE FAMILY TABLE
One of the most underrated treasures in life is the family meal.
A family gathered around a table creates more than nourishment.
It creates memories.
The smells.
The sounds.
The conversations.
The traditions.
The jokes.
The occasional disagreements.
All of it becomes part of the foundation that people carry for the rest of their lives.
Many people would trade a fortune for one more dinner with someone they loved.
Think about that.
ONE MORE CONVERSATION
If you could have one more conversation with someone you miss…
Would you ask about their bank account?
Or would you want to hear their voice again?
Would you want to know what they owned?
Or would you want one more story?
One more laugh?
One more hug?
One more “I love you”?
The answer reveals what is truly valuable.
KINDNESS IS NEVER FORGOTTEN
I have discovered something remarkable.
People never forget genuine kindness.
A helping hand.
An encouraging word.
A smile during a difficult season.
A visit when they felt alone.
A note.
A phone call.
A prayer.
A cup of cold water.
These simple acts often outlive the person who gave them.
The memory remains.
The gratitude remains.
The impact remains.
PEARLS TO LEAVE BEHIND
Throughout Pearls for the Soul, certain truths continue to emerge:
“Everyone wants to be loved.
No one wants to be alone.”
“The purpose of life is to discover the purpose of life.”
“We were not put here to be defeated.”
“Everything you need to know is already within you.”
“When you feed the soul, you feed everything.”
And perhaps most fitting for this discussion:
“The only thing you truly own is what you become.”
Character is portable.
Love is portable.
Kindness is portable.
Wisdom is portable.
Everything else eventually stays behind.
WHAT WILL THEY SAY?
One day people will gather and tell stories about you.
What stories will they tell?
Will they speak of your possessions?
Or will they speak of your presence?
Will they remember what you accumulated?
Or how you treated people?
Will they remember your success?
Or your significance?
The difference matters.
PRICELESS
Who can forget the parent who sacrificed?
The grandparent who encouraged?
The teacher who believed?
The friend who stood by us?
The neighbor who cared?
The veteran who served?
The mentor who guided?
The stranger who showed kindness?
These people left behind the gift of themselves.
And because they did, they remain alive in the hearts of others.
WHAT THEN?
Build your estate.
Save wisely.
Leave what you can behind.
But don’t stop there.
Leave your wisdom.
Leave your stories.
Leave your example.
Leave your kindness.
Leave your laughter.
Leave your faith.
Leave your love.
Leave behind the gift of you.
It is the only inheritance that grows richer with time.
