Most destruction doesn’t announce itself.

It starts small.

A harmless excuse.
A little deception.
A “white lie.”

Then one day you discover something disturbing…

WHAT YOU WERE USING HAS STARTED USING YOU.

LYING, CHEATING, STEALING & DECEIVING — STOP IT BEFORE IT STOPS YOU

The stuff sneaks up on you.

It doesn’t announce itself the way it does when you finally get caught.

By then there may be shock, embarrassment, broken trust, consequences and a heap of trouble.

If we could see the ending while standing at the beginning…

perhaps we wouldn’t begin.

BEWARE THE “LITTLE” WRONG

Most people don’t wake up one morning and announce:

TODAY I AM GOING TO DESTROY MY CHARACTER.

It happens smaller than that.

A little lie.

A convenient omission.

Something taken because “nobody will miss it.”

A promise you never intended to keep.

A number changed.

A story adjusted.

A truth hidden because the truth would cost you something.

MMMMM?

That is where attention is required.

IT IS UPON YOU BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

One of deception’s greatest tricks is convincing the person practicing it that nobody notices.

Oh yes they do.

People observe.

They compare.

They remember.

And eventually your conduct begins speaking louder than your explanations.

Meanwhile, another deception is occurring inside:

YOU begin believing your own justifications.

“I had to.”

“Everybody does it.”

“It wasn’t really stealing.”

“They deserved it.”

“It was only a white lie.”

“No one got hurt.”

Be careful.

When wrong requires a story to make it right…

your conscience may already be trying to tell you something.

WHITE LIES AND A PENNY

Consider a penny.

Most people wouldn’t chase you down the street because you took one.

Its financial value is almost nothing.

But suppose you KNOW it isn’t yours and deliberately take it anyway.

Now the important question isn’t:

WHAT IS THE PENNY WORTH?

The question is:

WHAT DID YOU JUST TEACH YOURSELF?

The same applies to the so-called white lie.

Its immediate consequence may appear tiny.

But something happened inside.

You gave yourself permission.

And permission repeated becomes easier.

THE FIRST TIME IS HARDER THAN THE TENTH

This is worth pondering.

The first dishonest act may bother you considerably.

The second perhaps a little less.

Eventually something that once troubled your conscience becomes…

NORMAL.

That’s dangerous.

Not because you’ve suddenly become some terrible human being.

But because repetition trains us.

Whatever you repeatedly practice…

you get better at.

Including things you should never want to become good at.

THE DECEPTION CRAVES COMPANY

One lie frequently requires another lie to protect it.

Then another.

Soon you aren’t merely remembering what happened.

You’re remembering which VERSION you told to which person.

MMMMM?

What a job.

Truth doesn’t require that kind of maintenance.

Truth rests.

Deception works overtime.

And eventually cheating, scheming, manipulation or stealing may join the original little lie because boundaries have already moved.

This is why character matters in the SMALL things.

EVERYONE IS SORRY AT SOME POINT

Consequences have a strange way of bringing clarity.

People get caught.

Relationships break.

Jobs disappear.

Families suffer.

Businesses fail.

Reputations collapse.

Courts become involved.

And suddenly the person sees what everyone else was trying to tell them.

Then comes:

I’M SORRY.

Sometimes sincerely.

Sometimes because they got caught.

There is a tremendous difference.

Remorse says:

I’M SORRY THIS HAPPENED TO ME.

Repentance says:

I’M SORRY I DID THIS AND I DON’T WANT TO BE THAT PERSON ANYMORE.

That’s where real change can begin.

STOP IT RIGHT NOW

Here’s the beautiful part.

You don’t have to wait for the explosion.

You don’t need a courtroom.

You don’t need public humiliation.

You don’t need to lose everything before becoming honest.

Your conscience may already be providing the exit.

LISTEN TO IT.

If you know something is wrong…

STOP.

Not tomorrow.

Not after one more deal.

Not after you make enough money.

Not after you get what you wanted.

RIGHT NOW.

Admit it first to yourself.

No storytelling.

No excuses.

No blaming everybody else.

This is what I did.

It was wrong.

I am stopping.

Now repair what can reasonably be repaired.

THE CREATOR OF ALL THINGS

I believe God understands human failure better than human beings do.

We fall.

We wander.

We make foolish choices.

We hurt ourselves and sometimes others.

Yet forgiveness makes something extraordinary possible:

A FRESH START.

But forgiveness isn’t permission to continue doing what required forgiveness.

There is a difference between falling down…

and choosing to live on the ground.

Get up.

Correct yourself.

Learn.

Make amends where appropriate.

And go forward differently.

THE RICHIE REVERSE

Want to understand honesty?

Reverse it.

Would you want someone lying to YOU?

Cheating YOU?

Stealing from YOU?

Scheming against YOU?

Deceiving YOUR family?

Manipulating YOUR trust?

Probably not.

Then there’s your answer.

Don’t manufacture for another person something you wouldn’t want delivered to your own door.

SPEAK UP

And if someone you care about is heading down this road…

care enough to say something.

Not with superiority.

Not with hatred.

Not because you’re perfect.

Tell them because you know where the road can lead.

KNOCK IT OFF.

Come back.

Stop before the consequences stop you.

A real friend isn’t always the person helping you feel comfortable.

Sometimes a real friend makes you uncomfortable enough to save you from yourself.

CHARACTER IS EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE

Money can be replaced.

Possessions can be replaced.

Jobs can sometimes be replaced.

But trust?

MMMMM…

Trust takes years to build and seconds to damage.

Your name matters.

Your word matters.

Your conscience matters.

The person looking back from the mirror matters.

Protect them.

FINAL THOUGHT

Don’t sell something priceless for something cheap.

A penny isn’t worth your honesty.

A lie isn’t worth your peace.

A dishonest dollar isn’t worth your character.

And getting away with something doesn’t mean you got away unharmed.

Because whatever you get into…

GETS INTO YOU.

So if something inside you is saying:

STOP.

Listen.

STOP IT RIGHT NOW.

Then turn around and begin again.
