Nothing Here Was Ever Yours

You arrived with nothing.

You will leave with nothing.

Everything in between is on loan.

The question is: What did you do with it?

BORROWED GREATNESS

Nothing Here Was Ever Yours

There is a strange thing that happens to human beings.

We are given something temporarily and then begin acting as though it belongs to us permanently.

A body.

A family.

A talent.

An opportunity.

A career.

A home.

A reputation.

A lifetime.

All borrowed.

Yet somewhere along the way we begin saying “mine.”

That is where the lesson begins.

THE LOAN AGREEMENT

Imagine arriving at a magnificent estate.

The owner greets you warmly and says:

“Everything here is yours to use.”

The gardens.

The house.

The tools.

The vehicles.

The treasures.

The only condition?

Take care of them.

Improve them if you can.

And when it is time to leave, hand them back.

Most of us would call that fair.

Yet this is exactly what life has done with us.

YOUR BODY

The body is perhaps the greatest example.

You did not build it.

You did not design it.

You did not create the heart that beats.

You did not invent the lungs that breathe.

You inherited all of it.

Then came the invitation.

Take care of it.

Steward it.

Use it wisely.

One day it will be returned.

YOUR GIFTS

The same is true of talents.

Some people sing.

Some build.

Some teach.

Some heal.

Some inspire.

Some lead.

Some comfort.

Some create.

The gift itself was given.

What we do with it is our contribution.

THE GREAT CONFUSION

Many people spend their lives accumulating.

More money.

More possessions.

More titles.

More recognition.

More status.

Nothing wrong with having things.

The confusion begins when we think those things belong to us permanently.

The reality is they are simply passing through our hands.

We are managers.

Not owners.

THE FRUIT TREE

Consider the fruit tree.

It receives sunlight it did not create.

Water it did not produce.

Soil it did not invent.

Air it did not manufacture.

Then something remarkable happens.

It gives fruit.

The tree participates.

It does not claim ownership of the process.

It simply fulfills its purpose.

There is wisdom here for mankind.

THE TRUE RETURN

Many people ask:

“What am I supposed to do with my life?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“What was entrusted to me?”

Your answer will reveal your purpose.

The purpose is often hidden inside the gift.

The responsibility is hidden inside the opportunity.

The reward is hidden inside the stewardship.

GREATNESS REDEFINED

The world often defines greatness as having more.

Life appears to define greatness differently.

Greatness is taking what was given and multiplying it.

A kind person becomes kinder.

A wise person becomes wiser.

A generous person becomes more generous.

A faithful person becomes more faithful.

Growth is the evidence that stewardship occurred.

WHAT TRAVELS ONWARD?

At the end of life there is a fascinating reality.

The houses remain.

The vehicles remain.

The money remains.

The titles remain.

The trophies remain.

Something else travels onward.

Character.

Wisdom.

Love.

Faithfulness.

Compassion.

The invisible things become the visible profit.

THE FINAL ACCOUNTING

Imagine standing before the Giver of all things.

Not being asked:

“What did you own?”

But instead:

“What did you do with what was entrusted to you?”

That question changes everything.

Suddenly every day matters.

Every opportunity matters.

Every relationship matters.

Every kindness matters.

Every choice matters.

BORROWED GREATNESS

You were given life.

You were given time.

You were given abilities.

You were given opportunities.

You were given people to love.

You were given a journey uniquely your own.

None of it was accidental.

None of it was random.

All of it was entrusted.

The greatest compliment we can pay the Giver is to return the gift improved.

To leave better than we arrived.

To multiply what was entrusted.

To become more than we were.

That is borrowed greatness.

And perhaps that was the plan all along.
