Lying works.

Cheating works.

Stealing works.

At least for a while.

Otherwise people wouldn’t keep doing it.

But there is always a price…

All of us enter this world innocent.

Curious.

Trusting.

Full of wonder and possibility.

Then life begins to teach us.

We learn from parents.

Friends.

Teachers.

Strangers.

Society.

Some lessons help us grow.

Others tempt us to stray.

Some people drift so far from what is true and right that they begin living by a different set of rules altogether.

And that is where lying, cheating, and stealing enter the picture.

THEY WORK…

OR SO IT SEEMS.

Let’s be honest.

Lying works.

Cheating works.

Stealing works.

At least temporarily.

If these things never produced results, people would stop doing them.

The liar gains an advantage.

The cheat gets ahead.

The thief acquires something without earning it.

On the surface, it appears successful.

But appearances can be deceiving.

Because what people rarely see is the invisible price.

I HAVE BEEN ROBBED…

BUT HOW?

The greatest theft is often not material.

The greatest theft occurs within.

Every dishonest act leaves a mark.

Every compromise leaves a residue.

Every shortcut alters the person taking it.

Peace begins to disappear.

Trust weakens.

Character erodes.

Conscience speaks.

And innocence slowly fades.

The person may gain something externally while losing something internally.

That is a terrible trade.

I HAVE EVERYTHING…
AND YET I HAVE NOTHING.

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to possess everything and still remain unsatisfied?

Money.

Power.

Status.

Possessions.

Luxury.

Yet no peace.

No contentment.

No rest.

There is an old saying:

“There is no rest for the wicked.”

Perhaps that statement points toward a deeper truth.

A troubled conscience cannot be purchased away.

A wounded character cannot be decorated into health.

A person may build a palace while secretly living in a prison.

The paradox remains:

Having everything…

Yet possessing nothing that truly satisfies.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“The richest person is not the one who owns the most, but the one who needs the least to be at peace.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

EARN YOUR WAY…
THE RIGHT WAY.

There is something deeply satisfying about honest effort.

A day’s work completed honorably.

Responsibilities handled properly.

Promises kept.

Truth spoken.

Fairness practiced.

When that person sits down to a simple meal, something remarkable happens.

The food tastes different.

Not because of the ingredients.

Because of the journey that brought it there.

Whether it is rice and beans or a holiday feast, there is a satisfaction that reaches beyond the stomach.

It reaches the soul.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE…
AND YOU CAN FEEL IT.

I have watched families save for months to enjoy a special outing.

Perhaps a vacation.

Perhaps Disneyland.

Perhaps a nice dinner.

They arrive grateful.

Appreciative.

Excited.

They may not buy every souvenir.

They may not purchase every luxury.

But they enjoy every moment.

Why?

Because they earned it.

The reward carries meaning.

The experience becomes richer because effort preceded it.

HONESTY IS STILL THE BEST POLICY.

Small compromises often appear harmless.

A little lie.

A small deception.

Taking something insignificant.

Cutting a corner.

But character is built the same way a wall is built.

One brick at a time.

And it is weakened the same way.

One brick at a time.

The little lie often requires another lie.

Then another.

Then another.

The shortcut demands additional shortcuts.

The compromise asks for further compromise.

Soon the exception becomes the rule.

WHAT THEN?

Ten dollars or ten million.

Sooner or later we all leave this world with empty hands.

Materially speaking, we all die poor.

The houses stay behind.

The cars stay behind.

The money stays behind.

The possessions stay behind.

But character…

Character travels with us.

Integrity travels with us.

Truthfulness travels with us.

Compassion travels with us.

The habits we cultivate become part of who we are.

That is why people who lie, cheat, or steal serve a purpose.

They remind us of the value of honesty.

They remind us that shortcuts come at a cost.

They remind us that character matters.

Most importantly, they remind us that the greatest rewards in life are not acquired.

They are earned.

May you prosper in truth.

May you prosper in honesty.

May you prosper in character.

For these are treasures that no thief can ever steal.
