Religion can teach.
Guide.
Discipline.
Organize.
Explain.
But eventually, it must point beyond itself.
Because the destination is not the ritual.
THE DESTINATION IS GOD.

There are many ways to travel toward a destination.
Hikers know this.
Climbers know this.
Travelers know this.
Sometimes there is a direct route.
Sometimes another path winds around.
Sometimes one road is easier.
Sometimes another reveals something the first one does not.
That has always made me wonder about religion.
If God is greater than the world…
Greater than cultures…
Greater than languages…
Greater than institutions…
Then perhaps our religious traditions should ultimately help us move toward HIM rather than merely teaching us to defend the path we happened to inherit.
RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO ARGUE
Religion can produce some of the most passionate arguments human beings have.
Why?
Because these questions reach deeply into identity.
Family.
Culture.
History.
Meaning.
Life.
Death.
God.
That makes people protective.
But when discussing something this large, I have found questions more useful than arguments.
Instead of:
I AM RIGHT.
Try:
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?
WHY?
WHAT HAS THIS TAUGHT YOU?
HOW HAS IT CHANGED THE WAY YOU LIVE?
WHAT DOES IT TEACH YOU ABOUT GOD?
Questions open doors.
Arguments usually build walls.
I FOUND EVERYTHING ALREADY HERE
One thing has always impressed me.
When I arrived in this world…
EVERYTHING WAS ALREADY HERE.
Mountains.
Oceans.
Trees.
Animals.
People.
Stars.
Weather.
Life.
I did not create any of it.
I entered as a visitor.
An observer.
A receiver.
And for a while…
A borrower.
That humbles me.
I hope during my portion of time here to become a good steward of what passes through my hands.
Because eventually…
I LEAVE IT ALL HERE.
That fact alone gives me more questions than answers.
I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT GOD
For me, God remains the mystery of mysteries.
What could be more worthy of investigation?
We examine galaxies.
Cells.
DNA.
Oceans.
Brains.
Matter.
Energy.
Time.
Yet behind all of those questions remains the larger one:
WHY IS THERE ANYTHING AT ALL?
That question leads me toward God.
And religion, at its best, should help with that search.
CONSULT THE HEART
When exploring spiritual matters, intellect is important.
Study.
Read.
Compare.
Ask.
Reason.
But I do not believe spiritual life can be reduced to intellectual information alone.
There is also conscience.
Heart.
Soul.
Insight.
Experience.
Faith.
There are things we may understand conceptually…
And things we must LIVE before they become real.
Religion can describe forgiveness.
But you must forgive.
Religion can teach compassion.
But you must become compassionate.
Religion can teach prayer.
But eventually…
YOU HAVE TO PRAY.
IS THE MAP THE DESTINATION?
Imagine somebody giving you a map.
The map is valuable.
It gives directions.
Landmarks.
Warnings.
History.
The experiences of people who traveled before you.
Good.
But suppose you become so attached to the map that you never take the journey.
Then what was the map for?
That is how I sometimes think about religion.
Doctrine matters.
Tradition matters.
Community matters.
Ritual can matter.
But all of those things should be doing something.
Leading.
Forming.
Correcting.
Pointing.
The map exists to help you travel.
WHY HOLD THE RELIGION AFTER FINDING GOD?
This question has interested me.
If religion helps someone encounter God more deeply, why continue practicing religion?
Perhaps because the path still serves a purpose.
Practice can keep us aligned.
Community can keep us accountable.
Tradition can preserve wisdom.
Ritual can remind us of truths we easily forget.
So perhaps the answer is not that religion becomes useless once faith deepens.
Rather:
THE RELIGION SHOULD SERVE THE RELATIONSHIP.
Not replace it.
GOD IS GREATER THAN THE CONTAINER
Human beings organize things.
We name.
Define.
Categorize.
Build institutions.
Write procedures.
Create denominations.
Establish customs.
That is understandable.
We like structure.
But God, if God is truly God, cannot be reduced to any human institution.
The container is not greater than what it contains.
The label is not greater than the reality.
That should keep us humble.
GOD WANTS OBEDIENCE… NOT OUR MANAGEMENT
Human beings love to manage everything.
We organize.
Package.
Franchise.
Standardize.
Follow the steps.
Step one.
Step two.
Step three.
Voilà.
Finished.
That works well for assembling furniture.
Spiritual life seems more demanding than that.
Because the issue is not merely:
DID YOU FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE?
It is:
WHAT ARE YOU BECOMING?
Are you more truthful?
More loving?
More just?
More patient?
More generous?
More humble?
More willing to serve?
That is harder to fake.
HOW CAN GOD BE ONLY IN ONE HUMAN BOX?
Different religions make different claims.
Some of those claims directly conflict.
So I am not suggesting that every religion teaches the same thing.
They do not.
But I do believe sincere seekers can encounter truth in many places.
A person should examine.
Compare.
Ask questions.
Study history.
Study scripture.
Watch how beliefs are lived.
Then ask:
DOES THIS LEAD ME CLOSER TO GOD?
DOES THIS PRODUCE TRUTH IN MY LIFE?
DOES THIS MAKE ME MORE LOVING, JUST, HUMBLE, AND RESPONSIBLE?
Those are serious tests.
THE LIFE SHOULD MATCH THE BELIEF
I have met people who speak wonderfully about God.
But then you watch how they treat people.
Something does not line up.
That matters.
The stronger testimony is not:
LOOK WHAT I BELIEVE.
It is:
LOOK AT WHAT THIS BELIEF HAS PRODUCED IN ME.
Living the belief is greater than merely discussing it.
If faith does not change behavior…
Something has been missed.
DO UNTO OTHERS
Consider one of the simplest spiritual principles:
DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.
Simple sentence.
Hard lifetime.
You do not need advanced theology to understand it.
You need practice.
That is where people stumble.
Knowing is easier than doing.
The problem is rarely:
I NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE.
The problem is:
I DID NOT LIVE IT.
KNOWLEDGE ONLY GOES SO FAR
You can study love without loving.
Study forgiveness without forgiving.
Study generosity without giving.
Study humility while remaining arrogant.
Study God while treating everyone around you badly.
Information is not transformation.
Eventually knowledge has to become:
ACTION.
WE ARE MOTION MACHINES
Human beings were designed to move.
Seek.
Ask.
Knock.
Investigate.
Search.
Explore.
Experience.
Learn.
We are not finished products sitting on a shelf.
We are travelers.
And I believe one of the noblest journeys available is the search for the meaning and purpose behind life itself.
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE MAY BE TO DISCOVER ITS PURPOSE
I have often thought:
Maybe part of the purpose of life…
IS TO DISCOVER THE PURPOSE OF LIFE.
That search can take a lifetime.
Good.
What else were you planning to do with it?
Ask.
Seek.
Read.
Pray.
Think.
Serve.
Observe.
Journey.
Go deeper.
The search itself changes the seeker.
SOMETHING GREATER THAN US
Across cultures and generations, human beings have repeatedly asked about transcendence.
God.
Spirit.
Creation.
Meaning.
Ultimate reality.
Why?
Because something inside us keeps asking.
Who made this?
Why am I here?
What happens after this?
What is good?
What is true?
Who is God?
Those questions refuse to disappear.
Perhaps we should respect them.
RELIGION SHOULD POINT
This is where I finally come down.
Religion should point.
Toward truth.
Toward God.
Toward responsibility.
Toward transformation.
Toward service.
Toward something larger than ego.
If it only teaches you how to win theological arguments…
Something has gone wrong.
If it makes you more arrogant…
Something has gone wrong.
If it teaches you to hate everyone outside your group…
Something has gone wrong.
The closer we claim to move toward God…
The more carefully we should examine what kind of person we are becoming.
FINAL THOUGHT
Religion is not supposed to become the finish line.
It should help you travel.
Learn from it.
Question it.
Practice it.
Let it discipline you.
Let it challenge you.
But keep asking what it is pointing toward.
For me…
The answer is:
GOD.
Seek deeply.
Journey honestly.
Live what you discover.
And do not stop merely because you learned the vocabulary.
THE PURPOSE OF THE PATH…
IS TO TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE.
PEARLS INSIGHT
Religion can function as a framework for spiritual formation through teaching, ritual, community, ethical guidance, prayer, and reflection. Different traditions make distinct theological claims, but the value of religious practice can also be examined through the character and conduct it produces. Spiritual maturity involves moving beyond identification with a label toward lived truth, humility, service, and an increasingly serious search for God.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
A central principle in Pearls for the Soul is:
THE SOUL MUST BE FED.
Religion can offer nourishment.
Teaching.
Wisdom.
Discipline.
Prayer.
Community.
But the purpose is not merely to collect religious information.
The purpose is to awaken the inner person toward truth.
When you feed the soul…
YOU FEED EVERYTHING.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This Pearl connects directly with:
BEFORE ALL THINGS… WHAT WAS THERE?
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
and
BELIEVING WITHOUT SEEING… IS CALLED FAITH
One asks about origin.
One asks about identity.
One asks about faith.
This Pearl asks:
WHAT IS THE PATH SUPPOSED TO LEAD YOU TOWARD?
My answer:
GOD.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Catholic?
Jewish?
Christian?
Muslim?
Hindu?
Buddhist?
Something else?
Fine.
Now I have another question.
WHAT IS IT DOING TO YOU?
Are you kinder?
More honest?
More humble?
More loving?
More willing to serve?
More interested in God than in winning an argument?
Because the label is not the finish line.
THE JOURNEY IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE.
Seek.
Ask.
Knock.
Learn.
Live it.
And if the path is doing its job…
KEEP MOVING TOWARD GOD.
