Have you ever noticed…
No one can stay
past their allotted time
whenever that is (mystery)
We are all visitors.
The question is…
What kind of visitor will you be?

Several years ago I found myself watching people in an airport.
Hundreds of them.
Young.
Old.
Families.
Business people.
Children.
Some were excited.
Some were exhausted.
Some couldn’t wait to arrive.
Others didn’t want to leave.
Then it occurred to me…
Everyone there was simply passing through.
No one planned on living at the airport.
It served a purpose.
Then everyone moved on.
Life has often reminded me of that scene.
We are all passing through.
This world has never really belonged to us.
We borrow it for a while.
We borrow the sunrise.
We borrow the mountains.
We borrow the rivers.
We borrow our homes.
We even borrow one another.
Nothing here asks to be owned forever.
Everything asks to be appreciated.
Perhaps that changes how we should live.
If we’re only passing through…
Why carry so much anger?
Why hold so many grudges?
Why spend so much energy proving ourselves?
Why not leave every place a little better than we found it?
I’ve noticed something about travelers.
The good ones travel lightly.
Not because they own less.
Because they understand what is essential.
They carry what matters.
The unnecessary eventually becomes heavy.
Life works the same way.
Resentment is heavy.
Pride is heavy.
Envy is heavy.
Fear becomes heavy.
Love somehow isn’t.
Kindness isn’t.
Gratitude isn’t.
Hope isn’t.
Those things seem to make the journey lighter.
I sometimes wonder if that is part of God’s design.
Perhaps He never intended us to drag yesterday into tomorrow.
Perhaps He intended us to keep moving.
Learning.
Helping.
Encouraging.
Wondering.
Discovering.
Loving.
One day every one of us will continue our journey beyond this place.
Until then…
May we leave footprints worth following.
May we leave people better than we found them.
May we never forget…
We were visitors.
But while we were here…
What a beautiful place to pass through.
