Most people want change.

Few are willing to risk for it.

Yet every worthwhile thing in life requires stepping beyond what is comfortable.

How often do we want different results while continuing to do the same things?

We want a better life.

Better relationships.

Better health.

Better finances.

More purpose.

More peace.

More adventure.

Yet we often stay within the same boundaries that produced the current results.

There is a problem with that.

Growth requires movement.

And movement almost always requires risk.

WHERE DO I START?

You can begin almost anywhere.

There are risks of the mind.

Risks of the heart.

Risks of the spirit.

Risks of the body.

Risks in relationships.

Risks in careers.

Risks in dreams.

Risks in becoming who you were meant to be.

Every worthwhile journey begins with stepping into something not fully known.

That is what makes it a journey.

AHHH…
LIFE.

Growth comes from change.

Change comes from choices.

Choices come from beliefs.

And beliefs ultimately determine the direction of our lives.

You cannot discover new territory while standing still.

You cannot find a new horizon while refusing to leave the shoreline.

You have to have some skin in the game.

YOUR THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR SHIP.

Too many people surrender their lives to chance.

They drift.

They float.

They react.

They wait.

But the captain was never meant to drift.

The captain was meant to steer.

Take inventory of your life.

What needs adjusting?

What needs courage?

What conversation needs to happen?

What dream needs another chance?

What opportunity deserves a second look?

Adjust the sails.

Turn the wheel.

Chart a course.

WON’T KNOW UNTIL YOU GO.

I remember avoiding certain social situations when I was younger.

Not because there was danger.

Because there was uncertainty.

I lacked confidence.

I lacked experience.

I lacked skill.

Then one day I participated anyway.

And something happened.

I learned.

The skill appeared.

The fear diminished.

The world became larger.

The same thing happened with college.

I imagined difficulties before I ever experienced them.

Then I went.

And discovered many of my fears had been exaggerations created by my own imagination.

Life does this often.

The monster is usually smaller once you meet it.

THE BIGGEST RISK.

Many people believe the greatest risk is failure.

I disagree.

The greatest risk is regret.

The greatest risk is arriving at the end of your life carrying unused gifts.

Unused talents.

Unlived dreams.

Unexplored possibilities.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“The treasure is rarely found standing still.”

And as I explored throughout Epilogue of Ebenezer Scrooge, one of life’s great tragedies is not what we attempted and failed at…

It is what we never attempted at all.

LET GO…
AND LET’S GO.

Experiment.

Learn.

Adjust.

Try again.

Take a second look.

Become teachable.

Become curious.

Become willing.

You do not need guarantees.

You only need enough courage for the next step.

Life has a remarkable way of meeting people halfway once they begin moving.

WHAT THEN?

Take the trip.

Start the project.

Write the book.

Make the call.

Learn the skill.

Ask the question.

Take the class.

Join the group.

Apply for the opportunity.

Open the door.

You may succeed.

You may fail.

You will certainly learn.

And learning is never wasted.

Remember this above all things:

You will not be back this way again.

This day.

This moment.

This opportunity.

This season of your life.

It will pass.

So risk wisely.

Risk courageously.

Risk purposefully.

And discover the magic that waits beyond the edge of your comfort zone.
