Some jokes are funny…
until YOU become the joke.
Then suddenly…
everybody’s sense of humor gets tested.
My granddaughter came to me one day with a gift someone had given her.
It reminded me immediately of the old WHOOPEE CUSHION.
Remember those?
You blew air into this rubber contraption…
slipped it under somebody’s seat cushion…
then waited.
The unsuspecting victim sits down…
and out comes THAT SOUND.
You know the one.
LOL.
Everybody usually knows it was a joke.
At least eventually.

THEY IMPROVED ON IT
Well…
apparently technology could not leave this ancient form of foolishness alone.
My granddaughter showed me an ELECTRONIC version.
This thing attaches underneath:
a table,
a chair,
or wherever the mischievous mind decides to plant it.
And…
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?
REMOTE CONTROL.
Now we have gone from primitive comedy…
to precision-guided embarrassment.
LOL.
You plant the device.
Everybody gathers.
Then at the chosen moment…
CLICK.
THE SOUND.
And if once is not enough?
CLICK AGAIN.
Now it sounds like somebody in the room is experiencing a medical-grade digestive emergency.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE REAL THING
She demonstrated it.
I laughed.
I admit it.
Then I asked for the remote.
That probably tells you everything you need to know about me.
LOL.
There is something strangely powerful about holding a little button that can instantly create:
confusion,
embarrassment,
suspicion,
and laughter
in an otherwise normal room.
We both laughed about the possibilities.
Then I started THINKING about the possibilities.
That is when the lesson showed up.
PERFECT FOR BUSINESS MEETINGS?
Imagine a serious business meeting.
Someone is presenting.
Everybody is listening.
Then comes one of those beautiful moments of total silence.
A PREGNANT PAUSE.
CLICK.
There it is.
Now what?
Does somebody laugh?
Does everybody pretend they heard nothing?
Does the speaker continue like nothing happened?
Does someone look under the table?
And here comes the really interesting part…
WHO DOES EVERYBODY LOOK AT?
LOL.
Now humor has become a social experiment.
IF YOU LAUGH…YOU CHOSE A SIDE
That is where jokes become complicated.
If you laugh…
you may embarrass somebody.
If you do not laugh…
you may look suspiciously serious.
If you say:
“WHO DID THAT?”
you just made the moment bigger.
If you say nothing…
somebody may assume YOU did it.
There may be no winning move here.
The prank has created its own little courtroom.
TRIGGERING THE BLAME GAME
Then somebody closest to the sound suddenly announces:
THAT WASN’T ME!
Well…
now everybody looks at THEM.
LOL.
They may have been completely innocent.
But the denial has just promoted them to PRIME SUSPECT.
Then someone else says:
“I didn’t think it was you.”
Which of course means…
they absolutely DID.
Now the whole meeting has departed from:
sales figures,
business plans,
or quarterly projections
and entered:
THE MYSTERY OF THE UNIDENTIFIED SOUND.
That may be the most interesting part of the meeting.
But probably not the most productive.
PERFECT FOR FAMILY GATHERINGS?
Now move this into a family gathering.
Different problem.
At home…
people know each other.
Sometimes TOO well.
LOL.
You have:
the uncle who will laugh for twenty minutes,
the grandmother who will be offended,
the cousin who will immediately accuse somebody,
the guest who has no idea what kind of family they just entered,
and the person who actually DID make a similar sound earlier and is now terrified.
This can get complicated fast.
A few seconds of laughter for one person…
can become twenty minutes of discomfort for another.
That is where humor needs JUDGMENT.
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
Funny to YOU…
does not automatically mean funny to EVERYBODY.
NOISES ARE CONTROVERSIAL
Human beings are funny about noises.
A burp.
A sneeze.
A cough.
A hiccup.
A stomach growl.
And of course…
THAT OTHER SOUND.
Everybody knows the body makes noises.
Yet when it happens in public…
suddenly civilization is threatened.
LOL.
Even coughing and sneezing come with rules.
Cover your mouth.
Use your elbow.
Use a tissue.
Do not spray the room.
Do not shake hands right afterward.
Common sense.
Manners.
Courtesy.
The point is…
even perfectly normal bodily functions become SOCIAL events when other people are present.
THAT IS WHY THE GADGET WORKS
The prank is effective because people are trained to react to embarrassment.
That sound carries:
surprise,
social discomfort,
uncertainty,
and comedy
all at once.
The device itself is not really funny.
The HUMAN RESPONSE is the funny part.
That is what we were really laughing at.
Not the sound.
The situation it creates.
WHAT DOESN’T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER?
Perhaps.
But not every joke makes everybody stronger.
LOL.
A prank may be harmless physically…
while still:
embarrassing someone,
making a guest uncomfortable,
or crossing a personal boundary.
So what do you do with one of these gadgets?
Use some judgment.
Know the audience.
Know the setting.
Know the person.
Among close friends who enjoy this kind of humor?
Probably safe territory.
At a funeral?
NO.
At a job interview?
NO.
During a wedding vow?
Please…
NO.
LOL.
The fun is not worth the damage when the setting is wrong.
THE TEST OF GOOD HUMOR
Here is a simple test.
When the joke is over…
can EVERYBODY laugh?
If yes…
good prank.
If only the prankster is laughing…
we may have a problem.
Humor should release tension.
Not permanently create it.
There is a difference between:
playful embarrassment
and
humiliation.
One connects people.
The other separates them.
THE PERSON MATTERS MORE THAN THE PUNCHLINE
This is where maturity enters humor.
People are more important than the joke.
Always.
If somebody is sensitive about something…
leave it alone.
If the room is tense…
maybe do not add more tension.
If somebody is already uncomfortable…
do not make them the entertainment.
You can be funny without being cruel.
That is a useful distinction.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Here is one Richie rule:
If everybody laughs afterward…
you probably had a good joke.
If only YOU laugh…
reconsider your material.
Another:
A remote control does not automatically come with good judgment.
LOL.
And one more:
The funniest joke is the one where nobody has to recover from it.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
From the spirit of Pearls for the Soul:
“Humor is at its best when it lightens the room without diminishing the people in it.”
From the spirit of God I AM:
“Joy shared with consideration strengthens connection instead of creating separation.”
From the spirit of It Is Finished:
“Release the joke when another person’s dignity has become the price of the laugh.”
PEARLS INSIGHT
Humor is highly dependent on:
context,
relationship,
timing,
and audience.
A joke that works among close friends may fail completely in:
professional,
formal,
or unfamiliar settings.
Good humor generally has one important characteristic:
the people involved can still feel respected afterward.
That does not eliminate mischief.
It simply gives mischief boundaries.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This connects directly with IF YOU ARE NOT LAUGHING…YOU MAY BE TAKING LIFE TOO SERIOUSLY.
Laughter matters.
But so does judgment.
It also connects with COMMAND YOUR PRESENCE…IT WILL WORK FOR YOU.
How we behave in a room affects everybody in it.
And KICKED UNDER THE TABLE…IF NOT REACHABLE AND TEACHABLE OUCH! reminds us that sometimes the best lesson is learning when NOT to act on the impulse.
EPILOGUE
So what happened to the electronic whoopee gadget?
Never saw it again.
My granddaughter apparently took our conversation under advisement.
Either that…
or she became much better at hiding it.
LOL.
FINAL SAY
Embarrassing?
Entertaining?
Depends entirely on where you are standing.
A prank can be hilarious.
A prank can also cross a line.
The difference is usually found in:
timing,
audience,
intent,
and respect.
Laugh.
Play.
Have fun.
Life needs all of that.
But keep enough awareness around to know when the joke has done its job.
Because once everybody has laughed…
you are finished.
Do not keep pushing the button.
LOL.
