Training can teach you what to do.
But training cannot DO it for you.
At some point…
THE PERSON HAS TO SHOW UP.
All the training in the world will not help you…
if you do not USE IT.
And even when training is used…
it often has to be:
updated,
adjusted,
refined,
and custom fit
for the situation in which it is being applied.
Training creates awareness.
Training offers tools.
Training supplies structure.
But the USER is still the primary factor in whether the whole thing succeeds or fails.
That means YOU.

TAKE CUSTOMER SERVICE
Do not confuse customer SERVICE…
with customer PROCESSING.
Big difference.
Processing says:
NEXT.
NEXT.
NEXT.
Move them through.
Handle the transaction.
Get them out.
That may be efficient…
but it is not necessarily service.
Customer service adds the human being back into the process.
A person who is:
genuine,
courteous,
open,
helpful,
and moving with a purpose
can make even an imperfect system work surprisingly well.
People sense that.
They know when someone is actually TRYING to help them.
And something interesting happens.
Customers will often overlook:
a delay,
a small mistake,
a system problem,
or an inconvenience
when they can see genuine effort coming from the person helping them.
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
People can forgive imperfection.
They have a harder time forgiving indifference.
DOUBLE EDGE ON THAT SWORD
The opposite is true too.
When an employee is:
cold,
dismissive,
uninterested,
rude,
or obviously going through the motions…
people notice.
Immediately.
And once the experience turns negative…
the customer starts seeing everything negatively.
Now the:
wait was too long,
counter was dirty,
price was too high,
music was annoying,
parking was terrible,
and somebody looked at them funny.
LOL.
The whole experience begins sliding downhill.
Training will not rescue somebody who refuses to USE what was taught.
A manual cannot manufacture:
attitude,
interest,
character,
or willingness.
TRAINING HAS TO LEAVE THE BOOK
This is where businesses sometimes fool themselves.
Management says:
WE TRAINED THEM.
Fine.
What happened AFTER the training?
Did anyone observe the behavior?
Did anybody coach?
Correct?
Refresh?
Measure?
Recognize good performance?
Or did the training become a binder sitting somewhere gathering dust?
Training that never makes it onto the floor…
is information.
Not performance.
There is a difference.
PEOPLE BUSINESSES
Most businesses are PEOPLE businesses whether they admit it or not.
Even when technology handles much of the transaction…
eventually somebody often needs:
help,
clarification,
a correction,
an answer,
or reassurance.
That is the moment where training meets reality.
Point of sale.
Customer service desk.
Telephone.
Email.
Office.
Reception.
Restaurant table.
Real Estate transaction.
That is SHOWTIME.
Everything a business built…
marketing,
advertising,
pricing,
location,
product,
branding…
finally arrives at one point:
A PERSON DEALING WITH ANOTHER PERSON.
That moment can either reinforce everything the company promised…
or destroy it in thirty seconds.
PEOPLE WIN PEOPLE OVER
This is worth remembering.
Training alone does not win people over.
PEOPLE DO.
A warm greeting.
Eye contact.
Listening.
A clear answer.
Some patience.
Owning a mistake.
Following through.
None of that is complicated.
But it has to be REAL.
You can train someone to say:
GOOD MORNING.
But you cannot train the words to sound sincere if the person would rather be anywhere else.
LOL.
The customer hears the difference.
TRAINING DOESN’T MAKE THE PERSON…
THE PERSON MAKES THE TRAINING
Training is a tool.
A very valuable tool.
But still…
a tool.
Give two people identical training.
One applies it.
Practices it.
Improves it.
Makes it their own.
The other memorizes enough to pass the test…
then forgets it.
Same training.
Different person.
Different result.
That tells you where the power really sits.
THE USER.
WHAT CAME FIRST?
Think about this.
What came first?
The person…
or the training?
THE PERSON.
Training was introduced later to improve:
skill,
knowledge,
performance,
consistency.
But the training has to land inside someone who is willing to USE it.
You cannot pour excellence into a closed container.
LOL.
WILLINGNESS MATTERS
I would rather work with someone who:
cares,
listens,
wants to learn,
and admits what they do not know
than somebody highly trained who thinks they already know everything.
Why?
Because the willing person can improve.
The unwilling person is already finished…
at least in their own mind.
That is dangerous.
TRAINING SHOULD CREATE THINKERS
Good training should not produce robots.
It should produce people capable of handling:
the expected…
and the unexpected.
Scripts have value.
Procedures have value.
Standards have value.
But life does not always follow the script.
The customer asks a question not covered in Section 4.
NOW WHAT?
That is where judgment enters.
The trained person understands the PURPOSE behind the procedure…
not merely the words.
That makes them adaptable.
CUSTOM FIT THE TRAINING
One size does not always fit all.
Customer service in:
a hospital,
a restaurant,
a Real Estate office,
a hotel,
and an auto repair shop
will share certain principles.
But the actual application differs.
The training should fit the environment.
The people.
The customer.
The risk.
The task.
The goal.
That is how training becomes useful rather than ceremonial.
TRAINING GETS OLD TOO
Yesterday’s best practice may not fit today’s world.
Technology changes.
Customers change.
Markets change.
Expectations change.
Laws and procedures change.
So training has to be revisited.
Refreshed.
Updated.
The idea that:
WE TRAINED EVERYBODY FIVE YEARS AGO…
does not impress me.
LOL.
Would you use a five-year-old map in a city that changed every street?
Probably not.
PRACTICE CLOSES THE GAP
Training teaches.
Practice installs.
That may be one of the biggest distinctions.
You can teach someone:
how to greet,
how to listen,
how to answer objections,
how to handle conflict.
But practice turns that information into something more natural.
Eventually…
the person is no longer remembering the training.
They are USING it.
That is where confidence appears.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Here is one Richie rule:
Training that stays in the classroom is decoration.
Another:
You can train the words.
You still need the PERSON to deliver them.
And one more:
People do not experience your training manual.
They experience YOU.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
From the spirit of Pearls for the Soul:
“Knowledge becomes useful only when it is carried into conduct.”
From the spirit of God I AM:
“What has been learned becomes meaningful when it is put to work.”
From the spirit of It Is Finished:
“Release the idea that knowing and doing are the same thing.”
PEARLS INSIGHT
Training is most effective when it is:
relevant,
practiced,
reinforced,
observed,
and adapted to real conditions.
Knowledge alone does not guarantee performance.
The person applying the training still brings:
attitude,
judgment,
motivation,
character,
and willingness.
That is why strong organizations do more than train.
They:
coach,
observe,
correct,
support,
and reinforce.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This connects directly with CONSISTENCY RULES THE DAY…DO YOU RULE?
Training becomes valuable when good behavior becomes consistent.
It also connects with PEOPLE WHO KNOW THEIR BUSINESS…TALK TO THE POINT.
Knowledge has to become usable communication.
And WHEN YOUR BEST IS JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH reminds us that sometimes effort needs to be joined with competence and proven performance.
FINAL SAY
All the training in the world…
is useless unless somebody USES IT.
Training can:
show the way,
demonstrate the standard,
provide the tools,
and prepare the person.
But then…
the person has to step forward.
Apply it.
Adjust it.
Practice it.
Improve it.
And make it REAL.
That is especially true in customer service.
The customer does not care how many training sessions you attended.
They care about:
HOW YOU TREATED THEM.
That is where the test takes place.
Not in the classroom.
Not in the manual.
Not on the certificate.
RIGHT THERE…
between one human being and another.
Training matters.
But remember:
TRAINING DOESN’T MAKE THE PERSON.
THE PERSON MAKES THE TRAINING WORK.
