If you remember where you arrived but cannot remember anything along the way, you may have reached your destination—but missed part of your life getting there.

COMING AND GOING

Coming and going is part of our daily routine. We awaken, prepare ourselves, leave the house, take care of responsibilities, and eventually return to where we began.

Nothing unusual about that.

The danger begins when the routine becomes so comfortable that we stop being aware of it. We enter what I call automatic mode—a semi-conscious state in which body memory takes over and we simply follow along.

The body knows the route.

The mind knows the routine.

The clock knows the schedule.

But where are YOU?

ASLEEP WHILE AWAKE?

Have you ever driven somewhere familiar and realized you could hardly remember the trip?

You arrived safely. You made the turns. You stopped at the lights. You reached your destination.

But much of the journey disappeared.

That is a small example of what can happen to an entire life.

We become so focused on where we are going, what must be finished, and what comes next that we stop noticing where we are.

The destination hypnotizes us.

PAUSE FOR CAUSE.

The destination may be important, but the journey is where life is actually being lived.

THE TREES HIDE THE FOREST

There are people, conversations, lessons, warnings, opportunities, and quiet moments surrounding us every day. Yet when we operate automatically, we walk right past them.

We see the road but miss the scenery.

We hear words but miss their meaning.

We complete the assignment but miss what it was trying to teach us.

We reach the destination but arrive with no story from the journey.

WHY THE JOURNEY MATTERS

Imagine being locked inside a room with nowhere to go.

After a while, what would you want most?

You would want to get out. You would want to go somewhere—almost anywhere.

That tells us something.

Movement has value beyond its destination. The ability to journey, explore, notice, discover, and experience is a gift all by itself.

Where you are going matters.

How you travel there matters too.

ROUTINES HAVE THEIR PLACE

There is nothing wrong with allowing the body to handle familiar morning routines. We are not fully awake when we first get up, and habit helps us prepare for the day.

The trouble begins when that automatic condition follows us out the door and takes control of everything else.

Routine then becomes monotony.

Monotony invites boredom.

Boredom dulls awareness.

Before long, a person can be busy all day without feeling fully alive during any of it.

PRISONER OF THE DESTINATION

Responsibilities are real. Promises must be kept. Work must be completed. Bills do not disappear because we decided to smell the roses all day. LOL.

But we do not have to surrender the journey to honor the destination.

We can accomplish what needs to be done while remaining awake to the life happening around us.

We can notice the person who needs encouragement.

We can enjoy the changing sky.

We can listen instead of merely waiting to speak.

We can take a different road occasionally.

We can appreciate the steps while still respecting the finish line.

WE CAN HAVE BOTH

Life is not asking us to abandon our responsibilities.

It is asking us to stop abandoning ourselves while fulfilling them.

You command the journey—not the clock, the traffic, the routine, or the circumstances.

Customize the trip.

Look around.

Listen.

Learn something.

Speak to someone.

Laugh when laughter shows up.

Give the moment permission to become part of your life story.

STAY IN YOUR MOMENT

The moment you are in is the vehicle driving the bus.

Thought can take you into yesterday. Worry can drag you into tomorrow. Routine can make today disappear.

But life remains right here, waiting for you to return.

Wherever you go, stay present enough to know you were there.

What you are doing—when you do it consciously—is writing the book of your life while you are still living it.

FINAL THOUGHT

A destination gives the journey direction, but awareness gives the journey meaning. Do not become so determined to arrive that you forget to live along the way.

PEARLS INSIGHT

Living on autopilot can cause us to miss meaningful experiences, relationships, and personal-growth opportunities. A purposeful life requires both accomplishing our goals and remaining aware of the journey that carries us toward them.

PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS

Throughout Pearls for the Soul, the message remains consistent: life does not hide its wisdom only at the finish line. It places Pearls throughout the journey for those willing to remain awake enough to recognize them.

PEARLS CONNECTION

This Pearl connects awareness, purpose, personal responsibility, and the precious value of time. The road is not merely the distance between two places. It is part of the life you have been given.

RICHIE SPEAKS

Reach your destination—but do not sleep through the trip getting there.

FINAL SAY

You are already on the journey.

The question is not only, “Where are you going?”

The question is, “Are you awake while you are getting there?”
