You can spend an entire day inside your own head…
Replaying yesterday.
Imagining tomorrow.
Arguing with people who are not even in the room.
Meanwhile…
LIFE IS HAPPENING OUT HERE.

Many people spend more time inside their own minds than they do inside the moment they are actually living.
We replay conversations.
Rewrite arguments.
Predict outcomes.
Imagine problems.
Plan responses.
Remember disappointments.
Invent future scenarios.
Then jump from one thought to another.
Round.
And round.
And round.
Like a hamster running on the old wheel.
A lot of motion.
A lot of effort.
Not much distance.
And just like the hamster…
WE GET TIRED.
ARE YOU A LEGEND IN YOUR OWN MIND?
The mind is an extraordinary tool.
It can remember.
Imagine.
Reason.
Create.
Plan.
Solve.
Dream.
But something interesting happens when the tool begins running continuously.
You stop using the mind…
And the mind begins using YOU.
You can become so absorbed in thought that the actual world becomes background scenery.
People are talking.
You are somewhere else.
The meal is in front of you.
You barely taste it.
You are driving.
You cannot remember the last several miles.
Someone asks a question.
You realize you did not hear half of it.
Physically present.
Mentally absent.
THEN LIFE SURPRISES YOU
When attention is constantly somewhere else, ordinary events can feel like sudden attacks.
A problem develops.
You did not notice.
Someone’s attitude changes.
You missed the signals.
Something needs attention.
You were busy replaying something from yesterday.
Then suddenly:
WHAT HAPPENED?
Maybe the event was sudden.
But sometimes the warning signs were there.
We simply were not.
VISIT YOUR IMAGINATION… BUT COME RIGHT BACK
I am not against imagination.
Quite the opposite.
Visit it.
Create there.
Dream there.
Think there.
Solve problems there.
But come back.
The imagination should serve life.
Not replace it.
There is a difference between thinking about life…
And actually LIVING it.
YOUR MIND NEEDS A RETURN ADDRESS
Everybody drifts.
That is normal.
You are sitting somewhere and suddenly thinking about something that happened ten years ago.
Fine.
The problem is not that the mind wandered.
The important question is:
CAN YOU BRING IT BACK?
That is awareness.
You notice:
I’M NOT HERE RIGHT NOW.
Then:
COME BACK.
Look around.
Listen.
Feel where you are.
Attend to the person in front of you.
Resume the task.
DON’T CONFUSE THOUGHT WITH REALITY
A thought can feel very convincing.
That does not make it true.
You can imagine someone is angry with you.
Maybe they are not.
Imagine disaster.
Maybe it never happens.
Replay an insult.
Maybe the other person forgot it five minutes later.
Create an entire future conversation.
Then discover the conversation never occurs.
The mind can manufacture emotional experiences from events that exist only inside itself.
That is powerful.
And sometimes expensive.
ARGUMENTS WITH PEOPLE WHO AREN’T THERE
Have you ever had an argument with someone who was not present?
You know what I mean.
You remember what they said.
Then you tell them what you SHOULD have said.
Then they answer.
Then you answer THAT.
Pretty soon you have won an entire imaginary debate.
Congratulations.
The other person wasn’t even there.
Meanwhile your body has generated real tension over a fictional conversation.
Interesting arrangement.
PLAYING HIDE-AND-SEEK IN YOUR MIND
There is another danger.
Thinking can become a hiding place.
Something difficult needs to be handled.
Instead of handling it…
We analyze.
And analyze.
And analyze.
Why did this happen?
What could happen?
What if?
What if?
What if?
Thinking feels productive.
But sometimes it is simply sophisticated avoidance.
At some point:
ACT.
RESISTANCE MAY BE TELLING YOU SOMETHING
When you repeatedly avoid something, investigate why.
A conversation.
A decision.
A responsibility.
A change.
A truth about yourself.
Resistance does not automatically mean you should force yourself through everything.
Sometimes resistance is useful caution.
But sometimes it points directly toward growth.
The thing you keep avoiding may be the very thing requiring attention.
So instead of automatically backing away…
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
Ask:
WHAT AM I RESISTING?
AND WHY?
COME BACK TO THE MOMENT
When you notice the mind drifting too far…
Come back.
Not violently.
Not angrily.
Just return.
What can you see?
What can you hear?
What is happening right now?
Who is with you?
What needs doing?
This moment is usually simpler than the fifty imaginary ones surrounding it.
LIFE IS HAPPENING OUT HERE… NOT IN THERE
The mind can create yesterday.
Tomorrow.
Fantasy.
Fear.
Regret.
Expectation.
But LIFE only happens in one location:
NOW.
You can remember yesterday now.
You can plan tomorrow now.
You can imagine next year now.
But the only place you can actually DO anything is here.
That should tell us something.
THE BALANCE MATTERS
Human beings need thought.
Emotion.
Physical activity.
Relationships.
Rest.
Purpose.
Attention.
Creativity.
We function best when these parts cooperate.
If one area dominates everything else, balance starts disappearing.
Thinking is useful.
Constant thinking is exhausting.
Feeling is useful.
Being ruled entirely by emotion is exhausting.
Imagination is useful.
Living mainly in imagination leaves the real world unattended.
The goal is not to empty the mind.
The goal is to keep it in proper relationship with the rest of you.
IS YOUR LINE BUSY?
Years ago, before call waiting, if someone tried repeatedly to call you and the line stayed busy, there were only a few possibilities.
The telephone was out of order.
Or somebody had been talking for a very long time.
I sometimes think solutions encounter us the same way.
The answer may be trying to get through…
But the line is busy.
Busy worrying.
Busy replaying.
Busy arguing.
Busy imagining.
Busy predicting.
No room for anything new.
OPERATOR… INTERRUPT THIS CALL
Maybe occasionally we need an internal operator.
“Excuse me.
I need to interrupt this conversation.
There is something happening in the real world.”
That interruption might be:
A child asking for attention.
A spouse speaking.
A friend who needs listening.
A beautiful afternoon.
A problem requiring action.
An opportunity arriving.
A solution you could not see while mentally rehearsing the problem.
Sometimes reality needs to interrupt the mind.
CHILDREN KNOW SOMETHING
Watch a small child play.
They can become completely absorbed in what is happening.
A rock.
A puddle.
A toy.
A dog.
An insect.
The present moment gets their full attention.
Adults often call that childish.
Maybe we lost something useful.
Children certainly imagine.
But they also know how to return quickly to what is directly in front of them.
Maybe maturity should not mean abandoning that ability.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BELIEVE EVERY THOUGHT
This is important.
The mind produces thoughts.
That is what minds do.
Not every thought deserves:
Attention.
Agreement.
Investigation.
Action.
Some thoughts can simply pass.
There it goes.
Interesting.
NEXT.
You do not chase every bird that flies across the sky.
You do not need to chase every thought that crosses your mind either.
FINAL THOUGHT
Use your mind.
Do not disappear into it.
Visit your imagination.
Plan tomorrow.
Learn from yesterday.
But keep returning to where life is actually occurring.
HERE.
NOW.
Because you can become quite a legend inside your own mind…
While missing the only life you actually have.
HEY…
LIFE IS HAPPENING OUT HERE.
COME BACK.
PEARLS INSIGHT
Rumination and persistent mental distraction can consume attention without producing useful action. Healthy self-awareness includes noticing when thought has shifted from productive reflection into repetitive mental looping, then deliberately redirecting attention toward the present task, environment, relationship, or decision. The goal is not to stop thinking; it is to keep thought connected to reality and action.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
A recurring idea throughout Pearls for the Soul is:
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
Not to remain inside the pause forever.
But to observe.
Understand.
Then return to living.
Reflection is useful when it leads somewhere.
The moment reflection becomes another hiding place…
OPEN THE DOOR.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This Pearl connects directly with:
HERE IS A DAY TO SPEND… SPEND IT WISELY
and
HOW TO INCREASE YOUR PERSONAL AWARENESS
Awareness asks:
WHERE IS MY ATTENTION?
Time asks:
WHAT AM I SPENDING IT ON?
This Pearl brings the two together:
DO NOT SPEND THE PRESENT LIVING IN A MOMENT THAT ISN’T HERE.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Having a conversation inside your head?
Fine.
Just don’t hold a three-hour meeting.
Replaying yesterday?
Learn what you can.
Then leave.
Planning tomorrow?
Good.
Then come back.
The mind is a magnificent place to visit.
I just wouldn’t move there permanently.
HEY…
LIFE IS HAPPENING OUT HERE.
