Life hands everybody lemons.

The difference is what you do after they land in your lap.

So go ahead…

MAKE MINE A DOUBLE.
BOTTOMS-UP.

There is an old saying:

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS… MAKE LEMONADE.

Sounds simple enough.

But when you are the one holding the lemons, suddenly the saying doesn’t sound quite so cute.

Because some lemons are small.

Some are inconvenient.

And some arrive carrying disappointment, rejection, loss, uncertainty, frustration, embarrassment, or a problem you never asked for in the first place.

That is when the real meaning of the saying begins.

You have two choices.

You can stare at the lemons and complain about how sour they are.

Or you can start squeezing.

TAKE THOSE LEMONS & SQUEEZE EM DRY.

There is something inside almost every difficult experience that can be used.

A lesson.

A warning.

A correction.

A new direction.

A stronger attitude.

A better understanding of yourself.

Maybe even an opportunity you could not have seen until the problem appeared.

That does not mean every bad situation suddenly becomes good.

It means you refuse to let the bad situation leave without giving you something in return.

Too many people spend their energy trying to get away from the problem.

Sometimes the better move is to go toward it.

Look at it.

Study it.

Ask what happened.

Ask what part you played.

Ask what can be changed.

Ask what must be accepted.

And then ask one more question:

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THIS NOW?

That is where lemonade begins.

Life experience has taught me that running from a problem usually lets the problem keep running right beside you.

Turn around.

Face it.

Deal with it.

Squeeze it.

Get everything useful out of it.

Then move on.

You may not control what life puts into your hands.

But you have considerable control over what you do with it once it gets there.

And sometimes the very thing you thought was going to ruin your day, your plans, your business, your relationship, or your direction becomes the thing that forces you to think differently.

Grow differently.

Act differently.

Live differently.

That is not pretending everything is wonderful.

That is using what happened instead of allowing what happened to use you.

So the next time life hands you a lemon…

Don’t just hold it.

Don’t spend the next six months telling everybody how sour it is.

SQUEEZE IT.

And when you think there is nothing left…

SQUEEZE IT AGAIN.

You might be surprised how much wisdom was hiding inside.

FINAL THOUGHT

The lemon is what happened.

The lemonade is what you decide to do about it.

PEARLS INSIGHT

Resilience is not simply enduring adversity. It is the ability to extract information, perspective, strength, and opportunity from difficult experiences. Problems become more useful when we stop asking only, “Why did this happen to me?” and begin asking, “What can I learn, change, improve, or create because it happened?”

PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS

A recurring truth throughout Pearls for the Soul is that life is not merely something that happens around us. We participate in what comes next through our attitude, decisions, and actions.

The circumstance may have arrived without your permission.

Your response still belongs to you.

PEARLS CONNECTION

This Pearl connects directly with another principle we return to often:

HINDSIGHT IS A LEARNING TOOL.

Once the difficult moment has passed, look backward—not to live there, but to collect what the experience came to teach you.

Then carry the lesson forward.

Leave the bitterness behind.

RICHIE SPEAKS

Got lemons?

GOOD.

Apparently we’re making lemonade.

MAKE MINE A DOUBLE.

BOTTOMS-UP.
