Sometimes the best thing you can DO…
is stop trying to force everything.
Observe.
Listen.
Let life show you what is already there.

Oftentimes I get up with the birds and sip my coffee.
I watch them come and go.
Each one seems to have its own little agenda.
Find food.
Protect territory.
Look for a mate.
Build a nest.
Scout for predators.
Enjoy the sun.
Enjoy the wind.
Sing.
Move.
Rest.
Then move again.
And I sit there wondering…
WHAT CAN WE LEARN HERE?
HUMANS OUT & ABOUT
I see human beings doing much the same thing.
Going here.
Going there.
Working.
Shopping.
Driving.
Talking.
Planning.
Searching.
But there is a difference.
Sometimes the JOY OF NAVIGATING gets lost.
The destination becomes more important than everything experienced on the way there.
People travel through:
their thoughts,
their fears,
their emotions,
their predictions,
their worries…
instead of traveling through the actual moment they are standing in.
Their body is HERE.
Their mind is somewhere else.
TAKE NOTE
There is something extremely restful about allowing yourself to become still.
By still…
I do not necessarily mean lying down and doing absolutely nothing.
I mean becoming quiet enough inside to stop interfering with every moment.
Let the thinking settle.
Let the emotions move into a manageable place.
Then activate the senses.
LOOK.
LISTEN.
SMELL.
FEEL.
NOTICE.
In essence…
OBSERVE.
PAUSE FOR CAUSE.
You do not always need to add something to the moment.
Sometimes the moment already has plenty in it.
A LOT GOING ON
When you practice observation, you begin receiving information that rushing would have missed.
People reveal things.
Nature reveals things.
Your own reactions reveal things.
Patterns become visible.
Sometimes an answer to a problem appears because you finally became quiet enough to SEE it.
Not everything is solved by more force.
Some things are solved by better awareness.
That is an important distinction.
THE MYSTERY
Here is the mystery:
If you can learn to do NOTHING correctly…
you may stop doing many things incorrectly.
Now that sounds strange.
LOL.
But think about it.
Doing nothing correctly does not mean:
being lazy,
avoiding responsibility,
ignoring problems,
or refusing to act.
It means knowing when NOT to interfere.
When not to react.
When not to argue.
When not to rush.
When not to force.
When not to fill every quiet space with noise.
There is an art to leaving something alone long enough for clarity to arrive.
LAYING DOWN THE WILL
Sometimes we become so determined to make reality conform to our expectations…
that we stop experiencing reality.
We push.
Control.
Demand.
Predict.
Manipulate.
Then wonder why we are exhausted.
There are laws and processes already at work around us.
Nature has rhythm.
People have timing.
Situations unfold.
Some things can be influenced.
Some cannot.
Wisdom includes knowing the difference.
BARES LOOKING INTO
There are philosophical and religious traditions, including strands of Hindu and Buddhist thought, that warn about attachment and uncontrolled craving.
That does not mean every Hindu lives with one set of clothes and a cup.
That would be too broad a statement.
But the deeper idea is worth examining:
When WANTING becomes endless…
peace becomes difficult.
Wanting one thing is not the problem.
Being owned by wanting may be.
That bears looking into.
PURSUING IS PART OF THE HAPPINESS
Here in America, we celebrate:
ambition,
opportunity,
achievement,
the pursuit of happiness.
Fine.
I am all for movement.
I am all for growth.
I am all for putting legs on ideas.
But HOW we pursue matters.
If the pursuit produces:
guilt,
dishonesty,
constant anxiety,
envy,
or loss of joy…
then perhaps the pursuit is beginning to own the pursuer.
The destination should not destroy the traveler.
FIND YOUR CENTER
If you practice what I am describing…
you may begin to discover that peace does not always require a vacation.
You can become something of an observation post wherever you happen to be.
At home.
At work.
At lunch.
Walking.
Sitting in traffic.
Watching birds.
Talking with someone.
The location may change.
The center travels with you.
That is valuable.
HAVE FAITH WHILE YOU TRAVEL
There is an old teaching about becoming like little children.
I understand part of that as:
openness,
trust,
curiosity,
presence,
simplicity.
Children can become completely absorbed in what is directly in front of them.
A bug.
A puddle.
A bird.
A strange rock.
Adults sometimes lose that.
We become too busy trying to get somewhere.
Faith can help restore a kind of trust in the journey.
Not blindness.
Not passivity.
Trust.
The belief that I do not have to control every inch of the road before I take the next step.
DON’T RUSH IT…IT IS YOUR LIFE
Go about your business.
Day by day.
But become more aware of:
where you are,
what you are doing,
who is with you,
what you are hearing,
what your emotions are trying to do.
Observe more.
Listen better.
Respond less automatically.
Control does not mean suppressing every emotion.
It means refusing to let every emotion take command.
Think:
less rollercoaster.
More steady travel.
There will still be:
ups,
downs,
turns,
surprises.
But you do not have to amplify every bump into a catastrophe.
LESS EFFORT CAN PRODUCE MORE RESULTS
Sometimes less force produces more effectiveness.
Your skills already know how to work.
Your experience knows things.
Your judgment has learned things.
Give those parts of you room.
If you have something useful to say…
say it.
If something needs doing…
do it.
If nothing needs doing…
perhaps leave it alone.
Keep things simple.
OBSERVE WITHOUT ADDING
This may be one of the hardest disciplines.
See what happened…
without immediately creating a story about it.
Hear what was said…
without automatically adding what you THINK they meant.
Observe first.
Interpret second.
Respond third.
That little space can save enormous trouble.
THE BIRDS AGAIN
And now…
I am watching the birds.
They are not holding committee meetings about whether the morning should have arrived differently.
LOL.
They sing.
Move.
Eat.
Rest.
Come.
Go.
They appear completely engaged with what they are doing.
No performance.
No unnecessary explanation.
No apology for existing.
And somehow…
what needs getting done gets done.
RICHIE SPEAKS
Here is one Richie rule:
Not every moment needs your interference.
Another:
Sometimes peace arrives when you stop trying to improve what was already fine.
And one more:
Doing nothing correctly means knowing when your next best move is NO MOVE.
PEARLS FROM THE BOOKS
From the spirit of Pearls for the Soul:
“Stillness can reveal what effort keeps covering up.”
From the spirit of God I AM:
“What is already working around you may become visible when the need to control becomes quiet.”
From the spirit of It Is Finished:
“Release the compulsion to react to everything and allow what does not need your hand to remain untouched.”
PEARLS INSIGHT
Intentional stillness is not inactivity.
It is disciplined non-interference.
Observation, emotional regulation, and present-moment awareness can improve judgment because they reduce impulsive reactions and allow more information to become visible.
The practical lesson is not:
DO NOTHING.
It is:
DO NOT DO SOMETHING MERELY BECAUSE YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH STILLNESS.
Sometimes the correct action is action.
Sometimes the correct action is waiting.
Wisdom is learning which one the moment requires.
PEARLS CONNECTION
This connects directly with THIS PAUSE SYSTEM WILL HELP WITH QUALITY LIFE.
STOP.
LOOK.
CHOOSE.
Sometimes the CHOICE is to leave things alone.
It also connects with YOU MADE IT TO THIS VERY MOMENT…HERE AND NOW.
Presence is where observation becomes possible.
And THE LEARNING CURVE IS PERSONAL reminds us that some of life’s best lessons arrive only after we stop rushing past them.
FINAL SAY
There is a mystery in doing nothing correctly.
It does not mean quit.
It does not mean hide.
It does not mean become passive.
It means:
stop forcing,
stop reacting,
stop filling every silence,
stop interfering when interference is not required.
Observe.
Listen.
Stay centered.
Act when action is called for.
Wait when waiting is wiser.
And maybe…
once in a while…
sit with a cup of coffee and watch the birds.
They may remind you that life can be very active…
without being frantic.
How much more then…
can human beings accomplish…
when we finally learn the mystery of DOING NOTHING CORRECTLY?
