Truth is wonderfully simple.

YES.
NO.
I DON’T KNOW.

Then ego enters the room.

Agenda enters.
Fear enters.
Gain enters.

And suddenly something simple becomes complicated.

MMMMM?

Maybe truth was never the difficult part.

Maybe WE were.

TELLING THE TRUTH? — I HOPE YOU ARE

In the world of:

YES.

NO.

I DON’T KNOW.

Almost anybody can participate successfully.

No elaborate storytelling required.

No complicated memory.

No performance.

No need to remember what version you told yesterday.

Truth travels light.

And when truth is employed, everybody’s time is put to better use.

The difficulty begins when truth confronts something fragile inside us:

EGO.

BIAS.

AGENDA.

FEAR.

PRIDE.

GAIN.

Now the simple truth may cost us something.

And THAT is where the test begins.

THE TITLE OF THIS POST SHOULDN’T EXIST

Why should anyone have to prove that truth matters?

Think about a little child.

Before life teaches concealment, manipulation, image management and all the other human tricks, innocence operates much more simply.

What happened?

Who did it?

Did you do that?

YES.

NO.

I DON’T KNOW.

Truth appears to be closer to our original condition than deception.

We learn deception later.

Truth was our birthing water.

TRUTH EXPOSES EVERYTHING

Truth has an interesting quality.

It doesn’t need to chase the lie forever.

Eventually truth simply stands there…

and the lie runs out of places to hide.

Storms come.

Stories change.

People argue.

Opinions shift.

Evidence appears.

Time passes.

But whatever is actually TRUE remains untouched by the argument surrounding it.

That is why truth becomes a foundation.

You may suffer temporarily for standing on it.

But foundations aren’t tested on calm days.

They are tested during storms.

THE TEST

Today, goodness and integrity are frequently tested precisely because their opposites remain available.

If lying were impossible…

telling the truth would require very little character.

If cheating were impossible…

honesty would require little discipline.

If stealing were impossible…

respecting another person’s property would hardly be a virtue.

The alternative exists.

And therefore…

CHOICE EXISTS.

MMMMM?

Now we’re getting somewhere.

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH

Most people eventually experience one.

A circumstance appears where the wrong choice offers something attractive.

Money.

Freedom from embarrassment.

Protection from consequences.

Status.

Advantage.

Acceptance.

A way out.

The temptation is rarely presented honestly.

It doesn’t announce:

HELLO. I HAVE ARRIVED TO DAMAGE YOUR CHARACTER.

No.

It says:

THIS WILL MAKE THINGS EASIER.

JUST THIS ONCE.

NOBODY WILL KNOW.

YOU DESERVE IT.

EVERYBODY DOES IT.

YOU CAN FIX IT LATER.

That is why it is called temptation.

If it looked ugly from the beginning…

who would want it?

WEALTH — POWER — FAME

These three continually show up in human temptation.

Not because wealth, power or recognition are automatically evil.

They are not.

The question is:

HOW DID YOU GET THEM?

WHAT DID YOU DO TO KEEP THEM?

WHAT DID THEY REQUIRE YOU TO BECOME?

Money obtained honestly is one thing.

Money acquired by betrayal is another.

Influence used to serve is one thing.

Influence used to dominate is another.

Recognition earned through worthwhile contribution is one thing.

Recognition purchased with your character is another.

It is not merely what a person has.

HOW MATTERS.

THE PAIN OF THE WRONG CHOICE

Here is the trap.

The wrong choice can feel good FIRST.

Relief!

The immediate problem appears solved.

You escaped.

You got the money.

You avoided embarrassment.

You won.

MMMMM?

For how long?

Now the conscience has information.

You know what you did.

The person in the mirror knows too.

And false relief begins charging interest.

THE PAIN OF THE RIGHT CHOICE

Truth can hurt FIRST.

That’s what makes the test difficult.

You may have to admit:

I WAS WRONG.

I DID IT.

I DON’T KNOW.

I FAILED.

I OWE YOU.

I SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT.

Those words may sting the ego.

There may be embarrassment.

Loss.

Consequences.

Even rejection.

But there is another side.

When the storm passes…

you are still standing inside yourself.

You did not abandon the person you have to live with.

YOU.

WHO IS LEFT STANDING AFTER THE STORM?

There is a particular peace that follows telling the truth when lying would have been easier.

You may not enjoy every consequence.

But something inside settles.

The story is over.

No maintenance.

No second lie.

No third lie.

No remembering who knows which version.

Truth rests.

And the soul can rest with it.

IF YOU FAILED THE TEST

Now suppose you lied.

Cheated.

Deceived.

Covered something up.

Welcome to the human race.

The important question becomes:

WHAT NOW?

This is where many people make the original error worse.

Instead of stopping…

they protect it.

One lie protects another.

Pride protects the lie.

Fear protects pride.

Then the person becomes trapped inside something they could have corrected much earlier.

Remember another Pearls principle:

STOP IT WHILE IT IS STILL SMALL.

THE CONSCIENCE CALLS

That discomfort after doing something wrong isn’t necessarily your enemy.

It may be the alarm.

Something inside is saying:

THIS IS NOT WHO WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE.

Listen.

Don’t immediately sedate the message with excuses.

Don’t say:

EVERYBODY DOES IT.

Don’t say:

IT WASN’T THAT BAD.

Don’t say:

I HAD NO CHOICE.

Maybe you did have a choice.

And maybe you chose poorly.

Good.

Now we can work with truth again.

WHAT DIRECTION ARE YOU HEADED?

Sometimes the best moral question isn’t:

AM I PERFECT?

None of us are.

Try this instead:

WHAT DIRECTION AM I HEADED?

Toward greater truth?

Or greater deception?

Toward stronger character?

Or more excuses?

Toward peace?

Or greater inner conflict?

Direction matters.

A person who falls while walking toward truth is in a very different position from someone deliberately marching deeper into deception.

REPENTANCE IS NO MYTH

Repentance is often described as a turning or change of mind and direction.

That means something very practical.

STOP.

TURN.

CHANGE.

Do differently.

Real repentance isn’t merely:

I’M SORRY I GOT CAUGHT.

It says:

I DON’T WANT TO CONTINUE BEING THIS PERSON.

That is a powerful declaration.

Because it allows the next choice to be different from the last one.

MERCY & GRACE

Here is something beautiful.

Human beings get second chances.

Sometimes from another person.

Sometimes from life.

And spiritually, I believe through the grace and mercy of God.

That doesn’t erase every earthly consequence.

But consequence and redemption are not the same thing.

You may still have to repair damage.

Apologize.

Repay.

Rebuild trust.

Face what happened.

Yet you can begin moving in the right direction immediately.

A second chance does not mean:

WHAT YOU DID DIDN’T MATTER.

It means:

WHAT YOU DID DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE LAST WORD.

THE RICHIE REVERSE

Try this.

Would you want someone telling YOU the truth?

YES.

Would you want your spouse truthful?

Your children?

Your doctor?

Your attorney?

Your accountant?

Your business partner?

Your friend?

Your government?

MMMMM?

Interesting.

We want truth delivered to us.

Therefore…

we should probably manufacture the same product.

GOT TRUTH?

Eventually mankind may learn something remarkably simple.

Don’t keep taking the test.

If lying presents itself…

don’t negotiate.

If cheating appears…

don’t entertain it.

If deception promises relief…

don’t ask for the brochure.

Just choose the right position and remain there.

YES.

NO.

I DON’T KNOW.

I WAS WRONG.

I’M SORRY.

HERE IS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

Those statements may occasionally cost you something.

But deception can cost considerably more.

FINAL THOUGHT

Truth doesn’t always promise short-term comfort.

It promises something better:

A place to stand.

When everything else is moving…

stand there.

When the ego protests…

stand there.

When temptation offers an easier road…

stand there.

And if you wandered away from truth…

come back.

Because the doorway remains remarkably simple:

TELL THE TRUTH.

Then live accordingly.
