WHEN ANY SYSTEM FAILS…
WHAT THEN?
In Part 1, we examined the large systems that support society.
The systems of government.
Banking.
Transportation.
Healthcare.
Utilities.
Communication.
Now let us look closer.
What about the systems within us?
Because when the outer systems fail…
The inner systems are all that remain.

THE SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS
PART 2
WHEN ANY SYSTEM FAILS…
WHAT THEN?
In Part 1, we talked about the systems that govern society and how dependent we have become upon them.
The power grid.
The banking system.
The transportation system.
The healthcare system.
The communication system.
The food supply system.
These systems affect millions of people and when they fail, everyone feels it.
Now let us turn our attention inward.
Because there is another collection of systems at work.
More personal.
More intimate.
More important.
Part 1 was about the outer systems.
Part 2 is about the inner systems.
THE SYSTEM OF BODY HEALTH
Your body is a system.
An extraordinary one.
Thousands of functions operate every second without your awareness.
Your heart beats.
Your lungs breathe.
Your organs perform their duties.
Your cells repair themselves.
Yet this system requires maintenance.
Proper nutrition.
Exercise.
Rest.
Moderation.
Stress management.
When we ignore these things, the system begins to struggle.
Too much food.
Too little movement.
Excessive alcohol.
Drug abuse.
Constant stress.
Poor sleep.
These place burdens on systems never designed to carry them indefinitely.
The body eventually sends notices.
Pain.
Fatigue.
Disease.
Breakdown.
The wise person listens before the warnings become alarms.
FAMILY SYSTEMS
Families are systems too.
Healthy families do not happen accidentally.
They require participation.
Communication.
Correction.
Encouragement.
Love.
Forgiveness.
Presence.
Children are not raised by good intentions.
They are raised by daily involvement.
Consistent maintenance.
Hands-on stewardship.
Neglect the family system long enough and eventually it begins to fail.
Relationships weaken.
Communication disappears.
Distance grows.
What was once thriving slowly deteriorates.
The same principle applies to marriages.
Friendships.
Neighborhoods.
And communities.
WHAT ABOUT BUSINESS?
Businesses are systems.
A plan is required.
Leadership is required.
Accountability is required.
Execution is required.
A business cannot survive indefinitely on ideas alone.
Someone must show up.
Someone must do the work.
Someone must maintain the system.
The same is true of every worthwhile endeavor.
Dreams require maintenance.
Goals require maintenance.
Success requires maintenance.
WHO WE ARE SYSTEMS
Perhaps the most important systems of all are the invisible ones.
Integrity.
Character.
Morality.
Honesty.
Responsibility.
Fairness.
Compassion.
These systems only function when practiced.
You cannot purchase character.
You cannot borrow integrity.
You cannot fake honesty forever.
These virtues require exercise.
Just like muscles.
Neglect them and they weaken.
Practice them and they grow stronger.
One of the great Pearls truths is this:
“Character is what remains when everything else is taken away.”
When these systems fail, no external system can save us.
THE DRIVING SYSTEM
Every day we participate in one of society’s most remarkable agreements.
Driving.
Thousands of vehicles moving at high speeds.
Separated by painted lines and mutual understanding.
There is very little physically stopping us from crashing into one another.
What prevents disaster?
Agreement.
Responsibility.
Rules.
Courtesy.
Self-control.
Trust.
The system works because most people honor it.
The moment enough people stop honoring it, the system collapses.
This applies to much more than driving.
It applies to civilization itself.
THE FARMER’S LESSON
Having lived in cities most of my life, I have always admired farmers.
They understand systems.
They understand seasons.
They understand cause and effect.
They understand work.
If they do not plant, there is no harvest.
If they do not tend, there is no growth.
If they do not prepare, there is no abundance.
Nature does not negotiate.
Nature rewards effort.
Farmers learn quickly that self-reliance is not a slogan.
It is a lifestyle.
THE POWER OF DOING THINGS OURSELVES
There is something deeply satisfying about self-reliance.
Growing food.
Fixing things.
Learning skills.
Solving problems.
Creating value.
Providing for yourself and others.
The more capable we become, the less fearful we become.
Competence creates confidence.
Responsibility creates strength.
Action creates momentum.
THE BEST SYSTEM OF ALL
Perhaps the greatest system available to any human being is belief.
Belief in God.
Belief in purpose.
Belief in truth.
Belief in oneself.
Belief that adversity can be overcome.
Belief that solutions exist.
Belief that tomorrow can be better than today.
When this system is healthy, everything else improves.
When this system fails, even abundance can feel empty.
PEARLS TO PONDER
“We were not put here to be defeated.”
“The purpose of life is to discover the purpose of life.”
“The greatest treasure you will ever discover is another human being.”
“Common sense is often the first thing to enter the room and the last thing people listen to.”
“When you feed the soul, you feed everything.”
These are not simply sayings.
They are internal operating systems.
They guide us when circumstances cannot.
WHAT THEN?
Develop your inner systems.
Strengthen your body.
Protect your family.
Build your character.
Honor your word.
Learn useful skills.
Become more self-reliant.
Trust your abilities.
Exercise your faith.
Because when the outer systems shake…
The inner systems carry you through.
And when ANY system fails…
You will already know what to do.
