Sometimes life stops you in your tracks.

You see another person’s struggle.

You see another person’s pain.

And a quiet voice inside whispers…

“That could have been me.”

Often, we come across something that humbles us.

It causes us to pause.

To reflect.

To ponder.

To look beyond ourselves for a moment.

We see someone struggling.

Someone suffering.

Someone who has lost their way.

Someone facing circumstances we would never wish upon ourselves.

And suddenly, a powerful realization arrives.

THAT COULD BE ME.

It is easy to forget our beginnings.

Life has a way of keeping us busy.

We rush from place to place.

Task to task.

Goal to goal.

Need to need.

Want to want.

Until one day, something appears before us that causes us to stop.

A homeless person sitting alone.

A family facing hardship.

A sick child.

An elderly person with no visitors.

Someone burdened by addiction.

Someone overwhelmed by life.

And in that moment, if we are paying attention, a deeper understanding begins to emerge.

THAT COULD HAVE BEEN ME.

If not for a helping hand.

If not for a second chance.

If not for a mentor.

If not for a parent.

If not for a friend.

If not for mercy.

If not for grace.

How often have I wondered how differently a person’s life might have unfolded if they had simply received one break.

One opportunity.

One encouraging word.

One person who believed in them.

One act of kindness.

Sometimes the difference between success and despair is smaller than we imagine.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“The more grateful you become for your blessings, the less likely you are to judge another person’s burdens.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

No person ever arrives where they are entirely on their own.

NO EXCEPTIONS.

Someone opened a door.

Someone shared wisdom.

Someone extended patience.

Someone offered support.

Someone gave encouragement.

Someone forgave.

Someone believed.

Someone cared.

The self-made man is largely a myth.

Behind every success story are countless visible and invisible contributors.

Parents.

Teachers.

Friends.

Employers.

Neighbors.

Strangers.

And sometimes divine intervention itself.

When we recognize this truth, something beautiful happens.

Humility enters the room.

Gratitude enters the room.

Compassion enters the room.

We stop looking down on people.

We begin looking at them.

We see their humanity.

Their struggles.

Their fears.

Their hopes.

Their dreams.

And perhaps for the first time, we realize how connected we all are.

Mercy has a way of finding all of us.

Some recognize it.

Some overlook it.

But it is there.

The promotion you received.

The accident you avoided.

The illness you survived.

The opportunity that appeared at just the right moment.

The person who came into your life when you needed them most.

Grace often arrives quietly.

Without fanfare.

Without announcement.

Yet its fingerprints are everywhere.

BE FILLED WITH GRATITUDE.

Not because you earned everything.

Not because you deserved everything.

But because blessings often arrive beyond our understanding.

The next time you travel through your day, pay attention.

Look to your left.

Look to your right.

Observe carefully.

When you see someone struggling…

Do not rush to judgment.

Do not assume superiority.

Do not imagine that life somehow owes you more than it owes them.

Instead, pause.

Reflect.

And allow compassion to have its say.

Because life has a way of reminding us that circumstances can change.

Fortunes can change.

Health can change.

Opportunities can change.

The person you see today may simply be carrying a burden you have been spared.

For now.

And if mercy has found its way to you…

Pass some of it along.

Offer encouragement.

Offer understanding.

Offer kindness.

Offer patience.

Offer hope.

You never know when your act of grace may become someone else’s turning point.

The next time life humbles you with the struggles of another, stop for a moment and behold the lesson.

THERE GO I…

BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD.
