“Good luck.”

We’ve all said it.

We’ve all received it.

But…

What exactly are we wishing?

“Good luck.”

How many times have we wished that upon another person?

How many times has someone wished it upon us?

It feels like a blessing.

A hope.

A sincere desire that life treats another person kindly.

For centuries people have parted company with those two simple words…

“Good luck.”

Yet have you ever stopped to ask…

What is luck?

LUCK DEFINED?

Luck is commonly described as success or failure brought about by chance rather than through one’s own gifts, talents, abilities, or preparation.

It is considered unpredictable.

Uncontrollable.

Invisible.

Yet somehow…

It appears capable of changing lives.

Or is it?

I WISH YOU WELL

Perhaps when we wish someone “good luck,” we are really wishing them well.

May things go in your favor.

May opportunities appear.

May unseen obstacles disappear.

May today’s journey be a good one.

That sounds much deeper than luck.

Perhaps it is simply goodwill spoken aloud.

GOT LUCK?

People often describe luck in different ways.

Bad luck.

Good luck.

A bit of luck.

Lady Luck.

Lucky break.

Lucky day.

Every culture seems to have adopted its own version.

Interesting…

Why has every civilization kept this idea alive?

NO SUCH THING AS LUCK?

Some confidently declare…

“There is no such thing as luck.”

Others respond…

“I make my own luck.”

That statement has always fascinated me.

If luck doesn’t exist…

How can someone manufacture it?

Perhaps what they really mean is this…

“I prepare well.”

“I work hard.”

“I remain ready.”

Preparation certainly matters.

But is preparation always the entire story?

LUCKY YOU?

Consider the Olympic athlete.

Years of discipline.

Thousands of hours of practice.

Sacrifice.

Commitment.

Then the race begins.

One wins.

Many do not.

Did only one prepare?

Of course not.

Every competitor trained.

Every competitor believed.

Sometimes victory is decided by something almost invisible.

A gust of wind.

A fraction of a second.

A slight stumble.

A tiny injury.

The timing of one perfect moment.

Preparation matters.

But so do countless variables beyond our control.

WHAT DOES IT BOIL DOWN TO?

Life is wonderfully mysterious.

Our choices matter.

Our preparation matters.

Our attitude matters.

Yet none of us controls every circumstance.

Perhaps wisdom is learning to prepare faithfully…

While remaining humble enough to recognize that not everything belongs to us.

LUCK…WHO ARE YOU?

Sometimes people call fortunate outcomes luck.

Sometimes they call unfortunate outcomes bad luck.

Perhaps those words simply become labels we attach to events we cannot completely explain.

Maybe luck is not a force.

Maybe it is our name for mystery.

GOD LUCK TO YOU?

The spiritual world has always approached this differently.

Providence.

Grace.

Blessing.

Favor.

Destiny.

Purpose.

These ideas reach beyond luck.

When someone says,

“God bless you.”

They are not speaking about luck.

They are offering a prayer.

There is a difference.

GAMBLING?

People often call the winner lucky.

Mathematics speaks of probability.

Physics speaks of motion.

Statistics speak of likelihood.

Yet the human heart still reaches for the word…

Luck.

Perhaps because mystery continues to exist wherever certainty ends.

WHY YOUR LUCK…

AND NOT HIS?

This question has puzzled humanity for centuries.

Why one person?

Why not another?

Why today?

Why now?

Sometimes there are answers.

Sometimes there aren’t.

Life doesn’t always explain itself.

LUCKY FOR YOU?

If you slow life down…

Everything becomes a choice.

Thousands of choices.

Millions over a lifetime.

Those choices influence direction.

Direction influences opportunity.

Opportunity influences outcome.

Was it luck?

Choice?

Preparation?

Providence?

Perhaps life contains more mystery than certainty.

THE LUCK OF THE DRAW?

Here’s what I know.

Every person reading these words has already experienced something greater than luck.

You are alive.

You are participating.

You are thinking.

Learning.

Growing.

Receiving another sunrise.

Perhaps life itself is the greatest blessing.

Call it luck if you wish.

Call it providence.

Call it grace.

Call it God’s gift.

Whatever name you choose…

Never become so familiar with life…

That you forget how extraordinary it truly is.
