Some people spend their lives looking backward.

Replaying conversations.

Rewriting moments.

Wishing they had said more, done more, or been more.

But life was never meant to be lived in reverse.

I find myself constantly reminding people about the rewards hidden inside the present moment.

Not yesterday.

Not tomorrow.

Not someday.

Now.

The moment you are in is where life actually happens.

Everything else is memory or imagination.

Yet many people become trapped by three familiar visitors.

WOULDA.

COULDA.

SHOULDA.

I call them…

THE REGRET SISTERS.

They arrive after the fact.

After the conversation.

After the decision.

After the opportunity.

After the moment has already passed.

And they always seem to have perfect advice.

A SIMPLE EXAMPLE.

Imagine two people meet and have a wonderful conversation.

The exchange is natural.

The dialogue flows freely.

Both people share openly.

Both feel heard.

Both feel understood.

The time together is meaningful and satisfying.

Eventually, the conversation comes to an end.

Before leaving, each person is asked:

Did you share what you wanted to share?

Yes.

Is there anything else you wish to discuss?

No.

Are you holding anything back?

No.

Did you accomplish what you wanted to accomplish in this moment?

Yes.

Satisfied and complete, they part ways.

THEY PARTED WAYS.

Now imagine they meet again months later.

One says:

“I wish I would have said more.”

The other replies:

“So do I.”

Soon both are discussing all the things they could have said.

Should have said.

Would have said.

Yet at the time, in the actual moment, both declared themselves complete.

What changed?

Not the moment.

Their thinking.

Their analysis.

Their hindsight.

The Regret Sisters arrived.

WOULDA.

COULDA.

SHOULDA.

REALITY HAS ITS OWN REWARDS.

The moment is innocent.

The moment is complete.

The moment asks only one thing of us:

Show up.

Be present.

Be honest.

Be attentive.

Participate fully.

Then let it go.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“The moment never asks for perfection. It only asks for participation.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

Many people attempt to rewrite history.

But moments cannot be edited.

They cannot be recalled.

They cannot be upgraded.

They cannot be replayed.

Once they arrive, they pass into eternity.

And another moment immediately takes their place.

THERE IS AN ENDLESS SUPPLY OF MOMENTS.

Think about the ocean.

Wave after wave arrives without effort.

Think about the stars.

Too many to count.

Think about grains of sand upon a beach.

The Creator never runs out.

Neither do moments.

Life continuously provides another opportunity.

Another conversation.

Another experience.

Another chance to love.

Another chance to learn.

Another chance to grow.

WHAT DOES THE MOMENT REQUIRE?

Very little.

Awareness.

Honesty.

Responsibility.

Attention.

If something needs to be said, say it.

If something needs to be done, do it.

If something needs to be shared, share it.

Then trust the moment.

Trust that what occurred was sufficient for that moment.

Life is not asking you to be perfect.

Life is asking you to participate.

DON’T LIVE LIFE BACKWARDS.

Many people spend more energy reviewing yesterday than living today.

That is like driving forward while staring into the rearview mirror.

Sooner or later something gets missed.

The reward is not behind you.

The reward is right in front of you.

Waiting.

Available.

Present.

Now.

The Regret Sisters are very persuasive.

They always have another story.

Another explanation.

Another possibility.

Another reason to second-guess yourself.

But you do not have to entertain them.

You do not have to invite them in.

You do not have to give them your time.

Instead, thank the moment.

Learn from it.

Honor it.

And move forward into the next one.

Life is happening now.

Not in your memories.

Not in your fantasies.

Not in your regrets.

Now.

The next time Woulda, Coulda, and Shoulda come knocking…

Tell the Regret Sisters you are busy.

You have a moment to live.
