The gap between the rich and poor seems to grow wider every year.

Meanwhile, millions of people quietly slip from the middle class into survival mode.

Poverty no longer always looks like tattered clothes and empty cupboards.

Sometimes it looks like a family working two jobs and still falling behind.

Sometimes it looks like silent worry.

Sometimes it looks like fear disguised as normal living.

Against this backdrop, another question emerges.

A very old question.

What happens when a person finally gets everything they thought they wanted?

Then what?

I AM HAPPY FOR YOU

I like to see people succeed.

I like seeing hard work rewarded.

I like seeing dreams fulfilled.

I like seeing people prosper.

There is nothing wrong with having.

Nothing wrong with succeeding.

Nothing wrong with building.

Nothing wrong with winning.

In fact, throughout the Pearls Series, personal responsibility, effort, perseverance, and purpose are constantly encouraged.

But somewhere along the road, a different question appears.

How much is enough?

THIS ONE GUY

I remember reading about a Wall Street trader who suddenly found himself worth over one hundred million dollars.

Most people imagine endless celebration.

But instead, he disappeared into the mountains.

Alone.

Searching.

Thinking.

Questioning.

Why?

Because once survival is handled, deeper questions begin to surface.

Purpose.

Meaning.

Contribution.

Legacy.

Identity.

The things money cannot purchase.

BILLIONAIRE PROBLEMS

Another wealthy man dedicated himself to helping everyone who wrote to him.

At first it sounded noble.

Then reality arrived.

Thousands of requests.

Endless need.

Conflicting stories.

People wanting help.

People manipulating.

People deserving.

People pretending.

He discovered something profound.

He was trying to play God.

And he wasn’t equipped for the position.

None of us are.

The experience humbled him.

MONEY IS A TERRIBLE GOD

Money makes a wonderful servant.

Money makes a terrible master.

One of the recurring Pearls themes is that external wealth and internal wealth are not the same thing.

You cannot continually take from the soil without eventually putting something back.

The land weakens.

Production declines.

The harvest suffers.

The same principle applies to people.

The same principle applies to society.

The same principle applies to success.

The same principle applies to wealth.

If all we do is take…

Eventually something becomes depleted.

Relationships.

Communities.

Families.

Purpose.

Meaning.

Character.

PUT BACK

That may be one of the greatest lessons of all.

Put back.

Teach.

Mentor.

Employ.

Encourage.

Create opportunities.

Build businesses.

Share wisdom.

Invest in people.

Leave things better than you found them.

No one got to where they are without the help of another.

Why should it stop with us?

HOW BIG IS BIG ENOUGH?

I sometimes wonder about enormous mansions.

Twenty thousand square feet.

Thirty thousand square feet.

Fifty thousand square feet.

Then I ask myself:

How many kitchens can one use?

How many bedrooms can one sleep in?

How many living rooms can one sit in?

How much space does one heart require?

The issue is not ownership.

The issue is attachment.

Own things loosely.

Because whatever you get into…

Gets into you.
