Everybody wants to be heard.

The interesting part?

One of the fastest ways to become important to somebody…

is to make THEM feel important first.

Listen.
Really listen.

Everyone wants attention.

That is not a criticism.

It is human.

People want to know they matter.

They want to know they were heard.

Seen.

Considered.

And if you want to become influential, trusted, liked, respected, or even loved…

give people some of that first.

Someone has to go first.

I am suggesting:

YOU.

Listening…

really lending somebody your ear…

is one of the most powerful tools a person can develop.

LOVE VIA LISTENING…CAN BE IN THE AIR

When you truly LISTEN to somebody, something happens.

They feel validated.

Respected.

Valued.

And the beautiful part?

You may not have to say much at all.

Sometimes the listener gives more through silence than the speaker receives through advice.

PAUSE.

Think about that.

You sit there.

You pay attention.

No phone.

No wandering eyes.

No waiting for your turn to talk.

And the other person begins to relax.

Why?

Because somebody is finally THERE with them.

That is powerful.

WATCHING PEOPLE LISTEN

There is even something pleasant about watching genuine listening happen between two people.

You can see it.

One person is speaking.

The other is present.

Not performing.

Not interrupting.

Not mentally leaving the room.

Just there.

That kind of attention has honesty in it.

Appreciation.

Respect.

It says:

“What you are saying matters enough for me to stop.”

That is a rare gift in a noisy world.

I HEARD YOU

In an intimate relationship, listening goes much deeper.

Words are only the surface.

Underneath them are:

feelings,

fear,

hope,

memory,

disappointment,

love,

confusion.

And when somebody feels safe enough to talk while the other truly listens…

you begin mining much deeper material.

That is where bonds are formed.

Not from always agreeing.

From KNOWING the other person was heard.

You can survive quite a few storms when both people know how to sit down and actually hear each other.

CUSTOMERS WANT TO BE HEARD

In business, listening becomes money.

LOL.

Customer service begins with:

“Tell me what happened.”

Not:

“Here is our policy.”

Listen first.

Let the customer finish.

Understand the real problem.

Then respond.

Once people feel heard, resistance often drops.

Now they are more willing to listen to YOU.

Cooperation enters.

Solutions become easier.

That is why a good listener can calm a situation before the solution even arrives.

REAL GOODS ARE EXCHANGED

Something valuable is exchanged when somebody gives another person full attention.

Trust.

Respect.

Time.

Focus.

Presence.

Those are real goods.

And people tend to reciprocate.

If you invest your attention in somebody honestly…

they usually become more willing to hear you too.

Not because you manipulated them.

Because you respected them.

There is a difference.

RICHIE SPEAKS

Here is one Richie rule:

If you want somebody’s attention…

try giving them yours first.

LOL.

Another:

A person who keeps interrupting is not listening.

They are waiting to reload.

And one more:

Sometimes the smartest thing you can add to a conversation…

is NOTHING.

LISTEN UP

Anybody can become a better listener.

But do not confuse hearing with listening.

Hearing is automatic.

Listening takes effort.

Focus.

Patience.

Practice.

You will mess it up.

You will interrupt.

You will drift.

You will start thinking about what you want to say next.

Fine.

That is the learning curve.

Then you catch yourself…

and return.

Like anything else, listening improves with use.

DON’T DETRACT

The temptation to interrupt is always present.

Especially when you have a great point.

LOL.

But interrupting can kill the flow.

It can tell the speaker:

“My thought is more important than yours.”

Now sometimes clarification is necessary.

Fine.

Ask:

“Do you mean…?”

“Let me make sure I understood…”

That can actually improve listening.

But interrupting just to change the subject or take over?

Different story.

Let the person finish.

You may discover the thing you were about to say was not needed anyway.

THE FULL ATTENTION TEST

Here is a simple test.

When somebody is talking to you:

Can you put the phone down?

Can you stop planning your answer?

Can you keep eye contact naturally?

Can you let a little silence happen?

Can you remember what they said five minutes later?

LOL.

That last one exposes a lot.

Full attention is not staring at somebody.

It is being with them.

PEARLS INSIGHT

Listening is one of the simplest ways to build trust, connection, cooperation, and influence.

People become more open when they feel respected and understood.

Focused listening reduces conflict, improves relationships, strengthens customer service, and creates deeper human connection.

PEARLS CONNECTION

This connects directly with KEEPING YOUR TRAP SHUT.

Sometimes the greatest improvement in communication comes when we stop trying to improve the sentence…

and simply stop speaking long enough to hear the other person.

It also connects with DON’T FORGET WHO ELSE IS IN THE ROOM.

Acknowledgment says:

“I see you.”

Listening says:

“I value what you have to say.”

Together, those two can change the whole room.

FINAL THOUGHT

Everybody wants attention.

So give some.

Give it freely.

Give it honestly.

Give it without immediately asking for something back.

Listen to your spouse.

Your child.

Your customer.

Your friend.

The quiet person.

The person who has been trying to tell you something for three weeks.

LOL.

You may be surprised what happens.

People open.

People calm down.

People trust.

People connect.

And eventually…

when it is your turn to speak…

they listen.

ARE YOU LISTENING?
