Gratitude.
It has guided me through good times, difficult times, and everything in between.

As I reflect upon my life, my marriage, my family, my friendships, my work, and this extraordinary journey we call life, I have become increasingly aware of one thing:
How much I do not know.
The older I get, the less interested I am in pretending otherwise.
Life has a way of humbling us.
Every answer seems to reveal ten new questions.
Every mountain climbed reveals another mountain behind it.
Every destination becomes a new starting point.
Yet through all of this uncertainty, one thing has remained constant for me.
Gratitude.
A CONSTANT STAR
Ancient sailors used the stars to navigate vast oceans.
They did not control the winds.
They could not stop the storms.
They could not command the waves.
But they could steer by the stars.
Gratitude has become that star for me.
When things go well, gratitude keeps me humble.
When things go poorly, gratitude keeps me hopeful.
When life is confusing, gratitude helps me regain perspective.
When life is wonderful, gratitude helps me appreciate it.
THANK YOU
I can do gratitude.
I can say thank you and mean it.
What do I really know anyway?
I have never traveled this way before.
None of us have.
This moment has never happened before.
This day has never existed before.
This life is a first-time experience for all of us.
Yet along the way we collect treasures.
A spouse.
A child.
A friend.
A mentor.
A neighbor.
A teacher.
A stranger who helped at the right moment.
These become the jewels of our journey.
And for each one, I remain grateful.
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR LIFE
One of the greatest discoveries I ever made was learning to pay attention.
Not just to the world.
But to my own life.
Mind your own business.
Run your own affairs.
Take responsibility for your own journey.
Tend your own garden.
When you do this, something remarkable happens.
Your life improves.
And once your own house is in order, helping others becomes easier and more natural.
You become an example instead of merely an observer.
WIN-WIN CHANGED EVERYTHING
Years ago I discovered the principle of Win-Win.
Not “I win and you lose.”
Not “You win and I lose.”
Win-Win.
I get my share.
You get your share.
Everyone leaves with dignity.
Everyone leaves respected.
Everyone leaves acknowledged.
This simple principle transformed my business relationships, friendships, and personal life.
As I often say:
“There is enough sunshine for everyone.”
Helping the other person succeed has never diminished me.
It has enriched me.
YOU HAD HELP
One of the greatest gratitude-producing thoughts I have ever encountered is this:
No one got to where they are without the help of another.
Nobody.
Not one person.
Someone opened a door.
Someone gave advice.
Someone encouraged.
Someone taught.
Someone believed.
Someone sacrificed.
Someone forgave.
Someone loved.
The self-made man is one of the greatest myths ever invented.
We are all standing on the shoulders of others.
Whenever I see someone struggling, I often remember another powerful truth:
“There go I but for the grace of God.”
That thought has kept me humble many times.
LISTENING CHANGED MY LIFE
Another gift that gratitude brought me was listening.
Not merely hearing.
Listening.
Listening to people.
Listening to life.
Listening to circumstances.
Listening to my surroundings.
Listening to what is not being said.
The moment you truly enter another person’s world through listening, life becomes richer.
People become fascinating.
Every person becomes a book.
Every life becomes a story.
Every conversation becomes a doorway.
When I am not busy living my adventure, I enjoy visiting yours.
THANK YOU AGAIN
Gratitude is not dependent upon circumstances.
If it were, it would come and go too easily.
No.
Gratitude is a decision.
A perspective.
A way of seeing.
Having life does not guarantee wealth.
It does not guarantee comfort.
It does not guarantee success.
It does not guarantee fairness.
But it does guarantee opportunity.
Opportunity to love.
Opportunity to learn.
Opportunity to grow.
Opportunity to serve.
Opportunity to become.
That alone is worthy of gratitude.

The storms may come.
The winds may shift.
The waves may rise.
But gratitude remains.
A constant star to steer by.
