Not every shortcut leads somewhere good.

Not every wish is a blessing.

Sometimes getting exactly what you want…

Is the worst thing that can happen to you.

One of the most fascinating lessons ever written comes from an old story called The Monkey’s Paw.

The story has survived for generations because it touches something deep inside every human being.

The desire to have things easier.

Faster.

Quicker.

Without sacrifice.

Without patience.

Without character development.

Without paying the proper price.

The Monkey’s Paw asks a simple question:

WHAT IF YOU COULD HAVE ANYTHING YOU WANTED?

Most people answer that question quickly.

Money.

Power.

Fame.

Success.

Influence.

Possessions.

Control.

The Monkey’s Paw simply smiles and waits.

Because it understands something many people do not.

The real danger is not getting what you want.

The real danger is wanting the wrong thing.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

One version of the story tells of a man stranded on an island after a shipwreck.

Alone and desperate, he discovers an ancient box buried in the sand.

Inside is a strange object.

The Monkey’s Paw.

A note promises three wishes.

Three opportunities to alter fate.

Three chances to change destiny.

The temptation is overwhelming.

The man wishes to become the richest man in the world.

Instantly he is led to a cave overflowing with treasure.

Gold.

Diamonds.

Rubies.

Pearls.

Wealth beyond imagination.

Yet he remains trapped on the island.

Alone.

Unable to enjoy any of it.

His wish was granted.

His happiness was not.

So he wishes again.

This time he asks to be the richest man in the world and surrounded by people.

Suddenly he finds himself among workers in the largest diamond mine ever discovered.

The mine belongs to him.

He is wealthy beyond measure.

There is only one problem.

The mine has collapsed.

Everyone is trapped underground.

The richest man in the world has become the richest prisoner in the world.

Again, the wish was granted.

Again, the happiness was not.

At last he understands.

The Monkey’s Paw does not grant fulfillment.

It grants desire.

There is a difference.

After careful consideration, he uses his final wish.

He wishes to be back on the island before ever finding the Monkey’s Paw.

Instantly he returns.

The treasure is gone.

The magic is gone.

The temptation is gone.

And strangely enough…

His peace returns.

THE ONLY WAY TO WIN SOME GAMES IS NOT TO PLAY.

Life is full of Monkey’s Paws.

The promise of easy money.

The promise of success without effort.

The promise of pleasure without responsibility.

The promise of rewards without sacrifice.

The promise of shortcuts.

The promise of getting something for nothing.

The promise that character is optional.

The promise that consequences do not matter.

The promise that you can outsmart life itself.

You cannot.

As I wrote in Pearls for the Soul:

“Anything gained without character usually leaves without permission.”

— Richie Naggar, Pearls for the Soul

There is a way that appears right.

There is a way that appears easy.

There is a way that appears attractive.

Yet many times that path leads exactly where it was always leading.

Toward disappointment.

Toward confusion.

Toward regret.

Toward emptiness.

The lesson is not that desire is wrong.

The lesson is that desire without wisdom becomes dangerous.

YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED TO SOMETHING FAR GREATER.

Life itself.

The real adventure.

The real journey.

The real reward.

The growth.

The learning.

The struggle.

The victories.

The setbacks.

The relationships.

The lessons.

The becoming.

These things cannot be wished into existence.

They must be lived.

They must be earned.

They must be experienced.

The person who takes the honorable path may travel slower.

But they arrive with something the shortcut traveler never acquires.

Character.

Integrity.

Wisdom.

Understanding.

The ability to appreciate what they have.

The ability to enjoy what they earned.

The ability to sleep peacefully at night.

That is treasure no Monkey’s Paw can ever provide.

Do what is right.

Do what is honorable.

Do what is decent.

Do what is true.

Do what is fair.

Trust the process.

Respect the journey.

Allow life to shape you.

The rewards that come from that path reach far deeper than money, possessions, or status.

They reach the soul.

And what reaches the soul…

Lasts.

Turn away from anything that resembles the Monkey’s Paw.

The easy way.

The deceptive way.

The manipulative way.

The shortcut that promises everything and delivers nothing.

Choose the better path.

Choose the path of character.

Choose the path of truth.

Choose the path that allows you to become the person you were meant to be.

That reward is worth more than three wishes.
