Most people spend their lives feeding the body.
Some spend their lives feeding the mind.
Few spend enough time feeding the soul.
Yet it is the soul that quietly determines the quality of everything else.

We pursue things.
That is what human beings do.
We pursue opportunities.
We pursue relationships.
We pursue careers.
We pursue experiences.
We pursue comfort.
We pursue security.
We pursue happiness.
From sunrise to sunset and throughout the years of our lives, we are busy chasing, building, acquiring, achieving, and becoming.
There is nothing wrong with that.
The question is:
What exactly are we feeding?
FEEDING THE OUTSIDE.
Most of us become very good at feeding our outsides.
We feed our bodies.
We feed our appetites.
We feed our desires.
We feed our egos.
We feed our entertainment needs.
We feed our schedules.
We feed our bank accounts.
We feed our collections.
We feed our image.
We feed our reputation.
And after all that feeding…
Something still feels hungry.
YOUR REALLY NOT THAT HUNGRY.
How many times have you stood in front of the refrigerator after already eating?
You are not starving.
You are not malnourished.
Yet there you stand.
Looking.
Searching.
Hoping.
Wanting.
For what?
It can’t be food.
You just ate.
Perhaps you are feeding something else.
Perhaps what is hungry isn’t your stomach.
Perhaps it is your spirit.
SOMETHING IS MISSING.
Have you ever achieved a goal only to immediately start chasing another?
The promotion arrives.
The house arrives.
The car arrives.
The vacation arrives.
The recognition arrives.
Then before you fully enjoy it, your attention shifts to the next thing.
And the next.
And the next.
The world calls this ambition.
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it is spiritual hunger disguised as ambition.
The soul is asking for something more meaningful than another trophy.
MATERIAL THINGS CAN BECOME MASTERFUL.
Possessions make wonderful servants.
They make terrible masters.
A tool should serve you.
A possession should help you.
A purchase should solve a problem.
But if your happiness rises and falls with what you own, then ownership has reversed itself.
Now the possession owns the owner.
Now the toy has become the master.
Now the pursuit never ends.
This is why some people have everything and still feel empty.
The outside is full.
The inside is starving.
FEED THE SOUL.
Within every human being is something deeper than intellect.
Deeper than emotion.
Deeper than appetite.
Deeper than ambition.
There is a spiritual nature.
A soul.
A place where meaning lives.
A place where purpose resides.
A place where truth is recognized.
A place where peace is discovered.
And that place requires nourishment.
Not occasionally.
Regularly.
DAILY BREAD FOR THE SOUL.
Just as the body requires food, water, and rest…
The soul requires wisdom.
Reflection.
Gratitude.
Prayer.
Purpose.
Service.
Compassion.
Forgiveness.
Truth.
Love.
Meaningful relationships.
Quiet moments.
These are the nutrients of the spirit.
Neglect them long enough and something begins to weaken.
BEWARE OF SPIRITUAL ATROPHY.
A muscle that is not exercised becomes weak.
A mind that is not challenged becomes dull.
A talent that is not used fades.
The spirit is no different.
Neglect your spiritual life and eventually you stop wondering.
Stop growing.
Stop listening.
Stop learning.
Stop becoming.
The body may continue.
The schedule may continue.
The paycheck may continue.
But something inside slowly goes quiet.
And that is a tragedy.
THE INNER TREASURE.
Throughout the Pearls Series I have returned to one observation again and again:
“The greatest treasure you will ever discover is another human being.”
Why?
Because people nourish the soul.
Meaningful conversation nourishes the soul.
Kindness nourishes the soul.
Purpose nourishes the soul.
Love nourishes the soul.
Service nourishes the soul.
Truth nourishes the soul.
These are treasures that no recession can diminish and no thief can steal.
LIFE AFTER LIFE?
Suppose for a moment that the spirit continues beyond this earthly experience.
Wouldn’t it make sense to prepare it?
Wouldn’t it make sense to strengthen it?
Wouldn’t it make sense to develop those inner qualities that matter most?
Faith.
Integrity.
Compassion.
Wisdom.
Humility.
Gratitude.
Character.
Even if someone disagrees with the premise, there is no downside to becoming a better human being.
ACTIVATE THE INNER.
The treasures lying within you are waiting.
Waiting to be discovered.
Waiting to be exercised.
Waiting to be shared.
Waiting to serve.
Many spend their entire lives searching the world while overlooking the riches already placed inside them.
As I have often written:
“Everything you need to know is already within you. Let’s flush some of it out.”
WHAT THEN?
Feed your body.
Take care of your health.
Work hard.
Build wisely.
Enjoy life’s blessings.
But don’t stop there.
Feed the inside too.
Feed the soul.
Feed your purpose.
Feed your character.
Feed your faith.
Feed your relationships.
Feed your gratitude.
Because when you feed the soul…
You feed everything.
